Coming Up Next: Amnesty? – HotAir

So says Charlie Kirk, at least on his radio show earlier today. And who knows? I’m a bit skeptical, but one can also chalk this up to the Don’t Put It Past Them category. And it pays to be vigilant, as we have learned repeatedly since 1986’s supposed immigration reform bill.

Donald Trump has won the short-term immigration battle by closing the border. He just got $175 billion in extra funding for DHS and border enforcement, along with the funds to create what Hakeem Jeffries called “a deportation machine.” (Jeffries thought that was a bad thing; most Americans beg to differ.) With all that winning, however, Kirk warned that some people think this might be a good time to cash in some chips for a comprehensive immigration bill that would include “mass amnesty,” or so some of what Charlie calls the “ruling class” are telling him:

Well, maybe. Right now, the political reality is that border security and deportations are popular — very popular. The latest Harvard-Harris CAPS poll shows that over six in ten Americans support closing the border (63/37) and 74% support Trump’s actions so far in deporting criminal illegal aliens. In fact, 57% of Democrats support those deportations. The numbers get even better when discussing deportations more generally; it’s literally an 80/20 issue, and 72% of Democrats want criminal illegal aliens deported. Support also remains strong in the latest CBS News poll, although the specific numbers differ.

However, some factions have a vested interest in cheap labor, not to mention cheap politics. Charlie doesn’t identify who his sources are, but it’s no secret that US business interests want some sort of labor flow into the country to keep prices and wages down. Trump’s latest comments suggest that he’s looking to build a legal system for migramt labor, probably akin to the bracero programs from decades ago, but only on the assumption that the border is otherwise secured and the illegal aliens have been removed first. And that would require some sort of action from Congress, which means that eventually Democrats will want amnesty on the table again.

My skepticism is mainly focused on this being a very poor moment to raise these issues. There is also no proposal on the table to debate, not even in conceptual form. No Republican will touch this with a ten-foot pole at the moment.

But eventually … amnesty and a comprehensive bill will return. Not today, not tomorrow, and maybe not this year, but it will come. If Democrats take over the House and/or Senate in the midterm elections, it will likely be their first bill, and they will put everything they have into making it a reality, helped along no doubt by parts of corporate America that wants cheap labor and downward pressure on wages.

We’ve seen this cycle for 40 years now. There is no reason to believe it has ended, not even with the current political anger over Joe Biden’s open-border catastrophe still very much evident in polling.

All we can say is this: We voted for mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens, not mass amnesty for them.

The only way to make sure the amnesty cycle does not come around again is to keep our eyes focused on telling the truth about open borders and the disasters they produce. Help us continue to report on the southern border and identify and fight back against the members of the “ruling class” who are going against the will of the American people.
