Michael Bay’s Forgotten $50 Million War Thriller Based on a True Story Becomes a Sleeper Hit in America

John Krasinski will always be known for his role as Jim Halpert in The Office, but three years after the show went off the air, he starred in a gripping war thriller that’s returned to streaming charts in America. Krasinski stars alongside Pablo Schreiber (Den of Thieves) and Freddie Stroma (Peacemaker) in 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, the docudrama following a group of soldiers stranded in Libya who struggle to make sense of the surrounding chaos. 13 Hours is streaming on Prime Video and Amazon MGM+ in America, where the film currently sits in the top 10.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi was not well-liked by critics upon release. The film currently sits at a 51% score from critics on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. However, most general audience members were fans of Krasinski’s war movie, which has led to it holding a solid 81% on the Popcornmeter. 13 Hours also struggled to find success at the box office — the film grossed only $69 million against a $50 million budget, leaving it around $30 million below its estimated break-even point. Krasinski’s Office co-star, David Denman, can also be seen in the war movie.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is based on the book 13 Hours by Mitchell Zuckoff, and Chuck Hogan wrote the screenplay for the film, with Michael Bay directing. For Bay, 13 Hours came right in between his work on Transformers: Age of Extinction and Transformers: The Last Knight, which he followed with 6 Underground (Ryan Reynolds). Bay’s most recent movie came in 2022 on Ambulance, the thrilling heist drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II that’s currently streaming on Peacock. Bay will also direct an untitled Skibidi Toilet movie — we’re unsure why, too.

Is John Krasinski in the New ‘Office’ Show?

John Krasinski is not expected to reprise his role as Jim Halpert in the new Office show, which has been titled The Paper. The Paper will premiere on September 4 and feature an entirely new cast, headlined by Domhnall Gleeson. Though Greg Daniels is still involved as the creator. Krasinski is busy writing, directing, and producing A Quiet Place Part III. Krasinski previously gave up directorial duties to Michael Sarnoski for the prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One.

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is one of the most popular movies in the world on Amazon MGM+.
