The New York Giants cut popular training camp darling Montrell Washington after the final preseason outing.
The New York Giants’ first 53-man roster cut was reported on the morning after the final preseason outing, as NYG elected to part ways with one of Jaxson Dart’s favorite wide receivers throughout training camp, fan favorite Montrell Washington.
“The Giants cut WR Montrell Washington, per source,” The Athletic’s Dan Duggan relayed on August 22. Adding: “He was an early camp star.”
Duggan also responded to a fan asking about Washington as a possibility for the practice squad, stating: “Historically, [the Giants have] cut about 10 guys the day after the preseason finale and then the rest come on cut day. Anyone cut today is likely not in their plans at all.”
Washington was another wide receiver/returner type who was initially brought in to compete with Ihmir Smith-Marsette. To his credit, he far exceeded expectations in New York, and perhaps that’s why the Giants chose to let him go early.
With Smith-Marsette and late training camp reunion Gunner Olszewski likely duking it out for the lone WR/returner role, Washington’s odds were always slim. But his strong chemistry with Dart could have theoretically earned him a practice squad role.
Instead, the Giants are likely allowing Washington to parlay his strong summer into a job somewhere else by giving him an early start in the search to find his next NFL opportunity.
