In case you were wondering — dating sucks no matter what galaxy you find yourself inhabiting. Today, Cineverse and Fandor have unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming film, Lesbian Space Princess, an adult-animated feature-length production starring the incredible vocal talents of The Pitt’s Shabana Azeez. Hailing from co-helmers Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese in what serves as their directorial debut, the pair also co-penned the screenplay for the project, which celebrated its world premiere earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival.
The top of the trailer introduces viewers to Saira (Azeez), a space princess who is unfortunately experiencing the gut-wrenching pain that comes with a lesbian breakup. As it would turn out, Saira’s now ex-girlfriend, Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel), was looking for a little more excitement when she got involved with the dreamy space princess. But, after Kiki is kidnapped by the villainous Straight White Maliens, her only hope is for Saira to put down her box of tissues, dry her tears, and come to her rescue, which — as any queer woman looking to get back together with their ex will tell you — she does with incredible haste. Joining Saira on her quest is a hodge podge of wacky personalities who jump over every hurdle thrown in their way on a mission to save Kiki from the most demented of bad guys.
The sounds of Azeez’s voice won’t be the only familiar melody that audiences will hear throughout Lesbian Space Princess, with the vocal call sheet also set to include Richard Roxburgh (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Gemma Chua-Tran (Back of the Net), Kween Kong (RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under), comedy troupe Aunty Donna (Mark Bonanno, Zachary Ruane, and Broden Kelly), Jordan Raskopoulos (The Ronnie Johns Half Hour), Reuben Kaye, Madeleine Sami (The Breaker Upperers) and Demi Lardner.
Where Else You’ve Heard Shabana Azeez’s Voice
In addition to her work as the leading heroine of Lesbian Space Princess and her turn as Victoria Javadi in HBO Max’s breakaway medical drama, The Pitt (which will soon return for a second season, Azeez recently appeared in a guest-starring capacity in the Netflix series, Apple Cider Vinegar. Beyond that, she was one of the supporting stars behind AMC’s Nautilus, the title that Disney first laid dibs on, filmed, and then canned before it was shopped around and picked up by AMC.
