Remember when Democrats and Republicans often differed on issues, but still got along for the most part? Some of us old Boomers remember the days when a frequent guest for drinks at the post-6 PM Reagan White House was the Democrat “Tip” O’Neil.
At least, it used to be that way, before apparently every Democrat, in office or not, started screeching that anyone to the right of Vladimir Lenin was a Nazi, a fascist, or whatever the leftist version of “doody-head” is on any given day. One Democrat, though, a senator no less, has opted out of the whole thing. That would be Senator John Fetterman (D-PA).
Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., said he won’t “be that guy” labeling opponents “Nazis or fascists,” all while ruling out a party switch during this week’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”
“I’m not going to switch. I’m just going to be an independent voice in the Democratic Party. I’m not going to be afraid of people,” he told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo.
“And if there are groups attacking a Democrat, the last one in Pennsylvania, then that’s part of the problem in our party. And if you want a Democrat that’s going to call people Nazis or fascists or all these kinds of things, well, I am not going to be that guy … I happen to believe the truth, regardless if it’s the Republican or the Democratic voice.”
That… is actually rational and sensible. We might disagree with Senator Fetterman on a variety of issues, but the man is keeping an even strain, even on the heated issues of the day, and has, in this, made a clear statement: He won’t be a part of it.

Fetterman Has Some Sage Advice for Schumer on a Government Shutdown
We might remember that during his ultimately successful 2022 Senate campaign, there were serious doubts as to John Fetterman’s ability to carry out the office. He had suffered a stroke and was showing some signs and symptoms that were worrisome. He appears now to have recovered, and while on the Senate floor, has actually traded his usual athletic shorts and sweatshirt for a proper suit and tie. And, it’s true, he has eschewed the incitement speech that seems to have infected many of his colleagues. He may oppose the efforts, but he’s not calling anyone a Nazi.
That’s not nothing.
Senator Fetterman has also been a staunch supporter of our Middle Eastern ally Israel, on at least one occasion trolling some pro-“Palestinian” protestors by walking past them waving a tiny Israeli flag, with a mocking grin on his mug. That’s a stunt we can respect. Speaking on Sunday to Maria Bartiromo, the senator said about the idea of a Palestinian state:
“When you have human beings held underground, tortured and starved, going on two years… it’s a reward for Hamas. That’s going to be their narrative. They’re going to claim that’s why we did 10/7 [2023], that birthed our nation, and I can’t ever give that to them,” he said.
The Democratic Party as a whole sure seems like it’s spinning, spinning, spinning on its way down the toilet bowl of history. But John Fetterman has been one of the surprises of recent Democratic Party history. If the party wishes to retain any relevance, it’d be better off listening to John Fetterman than to Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, or any of the foaming-at-the-mouth “Democratic socialists” and “Bernie Bros” in and out of government. I’d still vote against him, had I the opportunity, but he’s more worthy of respect than the vast majority of his party.
