Luke Donald has rubbished Keegan Bradley’s push to change the envelope rule that saw Europe gain half a point after Viktor Hovland withdrew from his singles match against Harris English due to injury.

A neck problem forced Hovland to sit out the Saturday afternoon fourballs match with Matt Fitzpatrick against Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns, which Europe won one up.

“Yeah, it has to change,” Bradley says. “I have a few ideas but I’m not going to tell you right now. I mean, the rule has to change.

And a video surfaced online of McIlroy consoling his wife and wiping the top of her hat with Luke Donald hitting out at American fans for “crossing a line”.

The 8.5 points won by the USA is the joint-most won in singles since Europe joined in 1979. That has now happened five times but it’s the first time the team dominating the singles hasn’t won the Ryder Cup.

“Luke [Donald] has set the bar for captaincy so extremely high. What he’s done these four years of being a part of, is absolutely astonishing.

“He has been so professional, so dedicated, so incredibly meticulous, and well organised and doing everything that he needs to do and that’s why you’ve seen the two performances you’ve seen from us.

“He’s the leader of the ship and he’s definitely led us the right way. The only thing left to say from I think from all of us is two more years.”

“The security presence was insane. There was a lot of language and abusive words. It was a minority of fans. There was a small subset of people that behaved differently.”

On a beer which was launched at his wife on Saturday evening: “It should be off limits but obviously it wasn’t this week. Erica’s fine, she’s a very strong woman. She handled everything this week with class and dignity like she always has. I love her and we’re going to party well tonight.”

Rose praises Erica McIlroy for “not bringing it into the team room”.

Lowry adds: “The abuse she received was unbelievable.”

“I don’t think we should ever accept that in golf. I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what we saw out there this week. Golf teaches you how to respect people and sometimes this week we didn’t see that. It’s not acceptable what happened here this week and we will tell our fans in Ireland in 2027 that this isn’t acceptable. We shut them up with our performance. We tried to handle everything that came out our way with class and poise and for the most part I think that we did that.”

Shane Lowry and Tyrrell Hatton are the only two men without a loss this week.

Only 37 European players had emerged victorious away from home before this week. Now there are 47 names on that list, with McIlroy and Rose having done so in 2012.

“You need your big guns to fire,” says Donald. “The US big guns didn’t get as many points as ours. Rory has made no qualms about how important the Ryder Cup is to him, and I think that’s inspiring. To have someone of Rory’s calibre fighting so hard, that’s inspiring for the team.”
