After a disappointing box office run that brought horror’s fantastic hot-streak this year to a crushing halt, the Jordan Peele-produced film Him recently debuted on PVOD platforms. Him delivered a decent enough performance on its first day of release on home video, cracking the domestic top 10 on iTunes, according to FlixPatrol. Directed by Justin Tipping, the movie was released theatrically only three weeks ago; it opened to poor reviews and an underwhelming box office response, grossing only around $26 million worldwide against a reported budget of $27 million.
The movie took the 10th spot on the domestic iTunes chart on October 8, finishing behind fellow horror films such as The Conjuring: Last Rites and Weapons, which claimed the top two spots after blockbuster theatrical runs. However, Him beat the likes of Materialists, Superman, and From the World of John Wick: Ballerina. Starring Ana de Armas in the titular role, the John Wick spin-off underwent significant reshoots, reportedly overseen by the franchise’s creative supervisor, Chad Stahelski. It was reported that Lionsgate wasn’t pleased with director Len Wiseman‘s initial cut, and didn’t want to risk dropping the ball on its most lucrative franchise.
Despite the reshoots, however, Ballerina ended up underperforming commercially. Produced on a reported budget of $90 million, the movie made only around $130 million at the worldwide box office, falling behind the second, third, and fourth films in the main John Wick franchise. De Armas’ unfortunate run continued with the survival thriller Eden, which debuted a few weeks later. Ballerina also featured star Keanu Reeves in an extended cameo, alongside returning players Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Anjelica Huston.
‘Him’ Earned Poor Reviews
Ballerina earned relatively positive reviews, and is currently sitting at a “certified fresh” 75% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Equipping a steely Ana de Armas with creatively brutal action choreography and a pleasingly kooky origin story, Ballerina pirouettes gracefully onto the Wickverse’s centerstage.” Meanwhile, Him seems to have settled at a 31% score on RT, where the consensus reads, “Fumbling the ball well before the red zone, HIM has style to spare but botches its promising conceit with rookie execution.” Starring Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers, the movie is available to watch at home.
