Sydney Sweeney’s acting has been savaged online by viewers, who slammed her ‘terrible’ German accent and described it as sounding ‘AI-generated.’

Eden, a true-life thriller which was released in August, follows a group of ‘disillusioned’ Europeans who settle on an uninhabited island in the Galapagos only to discover their greatest threat is each other.

Sweeney, 28, portrays Margret Wittmer, a real German woman who moved to an island in the area in the 1930s with her husband before documenting her remote lifestyle in her 1959 biography titled Floreana: A Woman’s Pilgrimage to the Galápagos.

But a snippet of the star-studded movie – which also features Jude Law, Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby – has recently gone viral on X, formerly Twitter.

Viewers were left unimpressed with Sweeney’s attempt at a German accent, slamming the two-time Emmy nominee and admitting that they struggled to pinpoint which dialect was being portrayed.

‘The accents are Gal Gadot tier,’ one critic declared.

‘Maybe I don’t know anything about accents but, what’s wrong with them?’ questioned another.

Others said they were perplexed by the apparent mix of accents – claiming that it felt forced and even as though the film was mocking those of European descent.

‘The acting, the accents, writing, direction, everything was atrocious,’ declared someone else, with another person observing: ‘This almost looks/sounds AI-generated.’

‘What are these accents I’m crying,’ mocked another, with someone else writing: ‘What accent is supposed to be displayed here.’

‘They could have cast literal unknown German actors, or anyone who had a grasp of German accents/language/culture, and they would have done a better job,’ pointed out one critic, with another simply writing: ‘Are they pretending to be German? It’s bad.’

‘Sometimes the mix of accents is so random it feels like a whole new language!’ one viewer observed.

‘All the accents in that movie are bad and hers just kinda disappears by the end of it,’ wrote another.

Sweeney has faced a series of setbacks to her public image in the past few months.

Over the summer, the Euphoria actress starred in a viral ad for American Eagle, which provoked a social media meltdown.

The commercial, titled Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, showed the star buttoning up a set of denim trousers and offering a playful pun on the word ‘genes.’

‘Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color… my jeans are blue,’ she said.

The campaign was met with an explosion of controversy after it launched in July, as social media users feverishly accused it of being racist and flirting with eugenics in light of its star’s appearance.

But Sweeney, who has often been accused of ‘oversexualizing’ her image, clapped back at critics in August.

In past year, the Anyone But You actress has featured in advertisements for everything from Baskin Robbins’ ice cream and Laneige lip balm, to the Samsung Galaxy 25 Edge.

Some fans have accused her of leaning too hard into suggestive marketing – but Sweeney insisted a lot of thought has gone into the racy ad campaigns.

When asked if she’s ‘thinking strategically’ while doing these provocative campaigns, the actress answered: ‘Yes. Very.’

‘I think it’s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience,’ the actress told The Wall Street Journal magazine of navigating online feedback.

One of her most eyebrow-raising deals came with Dr. Squatch, which sold a limited-edition line of soap infused with her actual bathwater.

The stunt dominated headlines and was torn apart all over social media, but Sweeney doubled down on her decision.

‘It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting,’ she said, seemingly unfazed.

She pointed out: ‘They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater.’
