Batman's New Costumes Launch A Must-See Era For The DCU

Nothing gets Batman fans talking like the debut of a brand new Batsuit, and the bolder the design, the bigger the reaction. Which makes DC’s relaunch of Batman an adventure no fan will want to miss, thanks to the tease of not just one new Batsuit, but multiple new variants designed for specific missions and purposes in the new DCU.

After years of grim and brutal trials for Batman in the pages of DC Comics, the publisher announced things would be changing dramatically with a full series relaunch. Not just a new Batman #1 to drive comic sales, but an injection of new energy, new ideas, and in the words of writer Matt Fraction, a more “superhero-forward” Batman than the world had gotten used to.

The relaunch more than delivered, with Fraction and artist Jorge Jiménez unleashing a new Batman suit with a new Bat-color scheme, a brand new Batmobile, and a new arsenal of superhuman-level technology to wield in the field. And not long after Batman revealed a boldly redesigned Stealth Batsuit, Jiménez took to Instagram to tease fans of even more Batsuits on the way soon:

While a legitimately new Batsuit can be a game-changer for some creative teams and relaunches, Jiménez teases he and Fraction will not be holding back. And with a jaw-dropping Stealth Batsuit out the gate, fans can only dream of what new and reimagined variants will be coming to the DC Universe next.

With a handful of issues down, the Fraction/Jiménez relaunch of Batman was already proving a hit with readers. A major reason being the move away from year-long wars against villains like Bane or Joker for shorter-form, ‘monster of the week’ chapters in a building Batman narrative. Giving Bruce Wayne (and his creative team) constant opportunities to debut new gadgets, weaponry, and tech.

Fans hadn’t dared to hope that would extend to full-blown Batsuits, giving Jiménez more opportunities to show off the new Bat-symbol in different forms, colors, and scenarios. But just as Batman was fast becoming one book that lapsed fans should be reading, the tease of Batman re-opening his wardrobe sweetens the deal to a certified must-read.

With new and renewed villains already confirmed to be on their way like Anarky, The Minotaur, and Lady Death Man, there is no way to guess what variations in Batman costumes will give Bruce Wayne the edge. Based on the bold decisions already being taken though, it’s safe to say readers will get more than they hope for.
