Every True Crime Fan Must Watch HBO Max's Upcoming Series

HBO Max is working on a new true-crime series that uses DC characters to create what sounds like a unique entry in the genre. It is no secret that there has been a surge of movies and TV shows in the true crime genre over the last decade, with many streaming services making the most of it.

True-crime series can come in many shapes and forms, with HBO Max series like The Vow and The Staircase adding to the growing demand for more projects within the genre. Streaming and the binge format go well with true-crime shows. However, the genre can always find new ways to transform itself, and an upcoming DC release plays into that.

DC Is Creating A Unique True-Crime Series For HBO Max

Multiple reports have revealed that DC is bringing back Skyler Gisondo after his DCU Chapter One debut as Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn’s Superman movie for a new series on HBO Max. According to Variety, the project is called DC Crime, serving as a “fictional true-crime series set in the DC Universe.” This is a long way from Superman fighting larger-than-life beings.

DC’s fictional true crime docuseries would have Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen as its host, with season 1 focusing on Gorilla Grodd as its main villain. The character is often associated with The Flash. As such, DC Crime opens the door for Ezra Miller’s The Flash replacement to enter Gunn’s DC Universe. Despite Grodd’s involvement, the series should remain fairly grounded.

That is due to how David Corenswet’s Superman and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane are not expected to appear. Instead, the true-crime series hosted by Olsen would include a returning roster of Daily Planet journalists who appeared in Superman. DC Crime hails from creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, known for Netflix’s American Vandal, which parodied true-crime documentaries.

Why The Superman Spinoff DC Crime Will Be Worth Watching For True Crime Fans

Daily Planet in James Gunn's Superman

True crime and superheroes are two genres that are not really meant to match. That is why DC’s new Superman spinoff series is so exciting, as the project is set to merge both genres to create something that will hopefully be unique and can thus be appreciated by fans of either side.

With a market oversaturation regarding true crime, given the many movies, shows, and documentaries that come out at an accelerated rate, I believe that any ideas to keep things fresh are worth taking note of. As such, DC Crime emerges as the perfect opportunity to open the door for true-crime fans to learn more about the DCU, and they might end up staying for more.
