Hundreds of diners are flocking to a new Japanese restaurant in Sydney, with massive queues snaking out the door, leading to wait times of up to two hours

Hundreds of diners are flocking to a new Japanese restaurant in Sydney, with massive queues snaking out the door, leading to wait times of up to two hours.

Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu, a popular restaurant chain in Japan, has opened its first ever store in Australia, selling its famous deep-fried beef cutlets – including marble wagyu and sirloin.

The crumbed beef dish, known for its crispy panko crust, is typically served medium rare – but customers can sear the meat to their liking using the piping hot stone provided in front of them.

The set comes with cabbage, rice and various condiments for dipping, including citrus sauce with Japanese radish, dashi curry, fresh wasabi, miso, a soft-boiled egg, soy sauce, sansho pepper salt and its signature Gyukatsu sauce.

The restaurant only opened its doors for the first time on Saturday, November 29 – but customers have reported huge crowds wait times of up to two hours, no matter what time of day or night they arrive.

‘We went on grand opening day, but the line was insanely long, it curved around the corner. We turned around instantly – it was crazy. Might wait for the hype to die down in a couple of months,’ one customer told Daily Mail.

Sydney food content creator Adrian Widjonarko shared the exciting news about the store opening – leaving Aussies racing to get a seat at the new spot.

‘Japan’s most popular katsu spot, Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu, has opened their biggest store in the world at the heart of Sydney,’ Adrian said on Instagram.

The beef cutlets are crumbed and then placed into a frying conveyor machine to ensure they are cooked perfectly and consistently.

‘The restaurant serves different cuts of beef,’ Adrian explained.

‘You can make it a set with rice, miso and cabbage. The ultimate set is the Australian wagyu – super tender with amazing marbling. You get your own hot stone to sear every slice just the way you like it.

‘The set comes with soft onsen egg, as well as condiment. Love the signature Gyukatsu sauce with a combination of sweet and savoury flavour, while the beef tongue comes with a spicy miso sauce.’

Aussies have expressed their excitement over the Japanese restaurant launching in Sydney, with one sharing: ‘OMG this is my favourite food to eat in Japan, as soon as I get to Osaka I always go straight to their store. I was only just looking for a Gyukatsu spot in Sydney a few weeks ago.’

‘So exciting, I loved this restaurant in Japan,’ another shared.

‘We loved this place in Kyoto,’ one revealed.
