On Tuesday, California prosecutors announced murder charges in the slayings of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle.
The Reiners’ son, Nick Reiner, 32, will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Nick Reiner will also face a special allegation for using a knife to carry out the murders, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Nick Reiner was expected in court on Tuesday, but his lawyer, Alan Jackson, said he was not medically cleared to be transferred from jail to the Los Angeles County Courthouse. Jackson did not provide details about his client’s medical condition.
Nick Reiner is accused of killing Rob and Michelle Reiner, 78 and 68, who were reportedly found with stab wounds at their Brentwood home on Sunday. A law enforcement source told The Los Angeles Times that police apprehended him hours later in South Los Angeles near USC.
Hours before the slaying, Nick Reiner allegedly got into an argument with his parents at a Christmas party held by comedian Conan O’Brien. Reports indicated that Rob and Michelle Reiner’s daughter discovered their bodies.
Family friends told The Los Angeles Times that Nick Reiner was staying in a guesthouse on his parents’ property. They also claimed that Michelle Reiner grew increasingly concerned about her son’s mental health in the weeks leading up to her murder.
According to the law enforcement source who spoke with The Los Angeles Times, Nick Reiner is on suicide watch and is under special supervision. He remains jailed without bond.
