Jack Black Teases Super Mario Galaxy Movie Easter Eggs for Fans

Jack Black is teasing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, saying that longtime fans of Nintendo’s classic Wii game will have plenty to look forward to in the upcoming film. Released in 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a global phenomenon, earning more than $1.36 billion worldwide and cementing Nintendo and Illumination’s partnership as a major force in theatrical animation.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie starred Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser. Thanks to its massive box office performance, Universal and Nintendo moved quickly to confirm a sequel, with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie positioned as the next chapter in the animated franchise.

In an interview with Games Radar+, Black offered a rare tease of the highly anticipated sequel while remaining careful not to reveal plot details. However, the actor did reveal that fans of the Super Mario Galaxy games should expect a faithful adaptation filled with references and deep-cut Easter eggs to the Wii-era favorite. Read his comments below:

I am a sworn to secrecy, but there’s tons of Easter eggs, and anyone who loves that universe will be very pleased with the way that it’s been brought to the big screen.

Super Mario Galaxy was released in 2007 and is widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time. The game introduced gravity-based gameplay, sprawling planetoids, and a more whimsical, orchestral tone for the video game franchise. It also introduced Rosalina, a now fan-favorite character who has since become a staple of Mario spinoff games. Drawing from Galaxy suggests the sequel could expand the scope of the Mario Cinematic universe far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom.

The first official trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie paints a picture of just how big the sequel’s adventure will be, with Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad seen traveling beyond the Mushroom Kingdom through star-filled portals, colorful planetoids, and surreal landscapes from Super Mario Galaxy, along with nods to Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Wonder.

The trailer also confirms several major additions to the cast. Brie Larson voices Princess Rosalina, bringing one of the franchise’s most beloved characters to the big screen for the first time, and Benny Safdie joins the cast as Bowser Jr., setting the stage for a more layered dynamic within Jack Black’s Bowser.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie also allows the film franchise to expand its visual ambitions. The Super Mario Bros. Movie leaned heavily on familiar environments like Bowser’s lava-filled fortress and Donkey Kong’s jungle arena, but the galaxy-spanning setting for the sequel offers an opportunity to explore other Mario landscapes and deliver a more visually daring experience.

Beyond the immediate fan excitement, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie represents Nintendo’s expanding cinematic universe. The company is already developing other adaptations based on its large gaming catalog, including 2027’s The Legend of Zelda, signaling a commitment to film and animation.

This trend mirrors Mattel’s growing slate of toy-based movies, which started with 2023’s massively successful Barbie film starring Margot Robbie, demonstrating that Hollywood is betting on established brands and IPs to build interconnected “cinematic universes” that are driven by the audience.

With Jack Black teasing Easter eggs and the trailer showcasing a bold new direction, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is shaping up to be a highly anticipated sequel designed for both longtime fans and newcomers into Mario’s ever-expanding universe.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens in theaters on April 3, 2026.
