A Singapore national was arrested by the police in India for allegedly filming videos inside a Hindu temple using camera-embedded smart glasses.

The man was identified as Thiruneepanar, a 49-year-old of Sri Lankan ethnicity, who was visiting the state of Kerala as a tourist, The Hindu reported.

Around 9:25am on Dec. 20, he went into Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple wearing smart glasses that were fitted with a concealed camera, The Hindu cited the local police saying.

Violating the rules

Visitors are not allowed to take photos and videos inside the temple, and all electronic devices are strictly banned.

According to the police, Thiruneepanar allegedly broke this rule by recording footage such as of the northern side of the temple, and an area known as the Thulabharam mandapam, where a sacred ritual is performed.

Thiruneepanar was later intercepted by temple security staff when they noticed his camera-equipped glasses.

They later handed him over to the local police, who recorded his actions as disobedience of a lawful order.

He was scheduled to report for further police investigations on Dec. 21.

Previous case

A similar incident occurred at the same temple in July.

A man from Gujarat, another state in India, was caught attempting to record videos inside the temple, also with camera-equipped glasses, The South First reported.

A police officer had noticed a flashing light on the man’s glasses, which was later found to contain a memory card linked to his phone.

When he was interrogated, the man said that he took the videos out of “curiosity”.
