‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Faces Huge Loss With Character Recast

The Last of Us is shaking up its cast as Season 3 prepares to begin production next year. News broke this afternoon that Danny Ramirez, who played the WLF soldier Manny in The Last of Us Season 2, will be recast heading into Season 3. It’s unclear who will take over the role at this time, but Ramirez’s departure is born out of scheduling conflicts, not creative differences. Fans are already raising questions about what project could be causing the scheduling conflict, with most pointing the finger at Secret Wars — Ramirez is confirmed to reprise his MCU role in Doomsday next year.

Manny is a member of the WLF who travels with Abby during the first few days of her journey in The Last of Us Part II. It’s already been confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 will adapt the second part of the Game of the Year-winning story, focused on Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) — Season 2 focused on Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) perspective. Ramirez may not have had a big role as Manny in Season 2, but he was certainly set to inherit much more screen time in Season 3. Whoever takes over the role will be one of the more important figures going forward.

This isn’t the first creative shakeup that The Last of Us has announced since Season 2 wrapped up earlier this year. News broke over the summer that The Last of Us game creator Neil Druckmann was departing the series to focus on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the new Naughty Dog game in the works that will be a PlayStation exclusive. Craig Mazin will take over full writing duties, and he’s already assured fans that this won’t be a problem.

When Does ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Come Out?

HBO has not announced when The Last of Us Season 3 will be released, but the show is following a similar trajectory to what it has before. If Season 3 begins filming early next year and can wrap before or during the summer, this would leave the post-production team months to work on it to secure a release sometime in the first half of 2027. Unless delays are reported or announced, fans can assume that The Last of Us Season 3 will arrive roughly two years after Season 2.
