Manchester United caretaker boss Darren Fletcher was booked for his post-match protests towards referee Simon Hooper, before he later hit out at the official after his side’s defeat by Brighton.
United suffered another blow in their difficult season as they were knocked out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 loss to the Seagulls at Old Trafford.
Home fans booed at full-time and Fletcher, who appeared to be furious, made a beeline for Hooper and his assistants on the pitch.
The former midfielder engaged in a lengthy conversation with the officials, after which he was booked by Hooper.
It was unclear what exactly Fletcher was angry about, but he shed light when speaking after the game and revealed it was do with Shea Lacey’s red card for two bookable offences.
‘Shea Lacey’s yellow card is ridiculous compared to the fouls that we had against us all game which ultimately then the lad makes a mistake and is sent off,’ he said. ‘For me it is poor refereeing.’

Lacey, 18, was introduced off the bench by Fletcher in the 62nd minute yet he was sent off just 27 minutes later.
The young winger had looked bright, but perhaps over-eager to make an impact, he was booked for catching Brighton star Brajan Gruda late in the 87th minute, before a second yellow card followed just two minutes later for dissent.
As Seagulls defender Ferdi Kadioglu attempted to shield the ball out for a throw-in, Lacey shoved the Turkish international in the back and was penalised by referee Simon Hooper.
Lacey, who was bemused by the decision, then picked up the ball and slammed it into the ground in a clear show of dissent, with Hooper left with no choice but to hand out a second yellow card.
Lacey looked devastated by his moment of madness as he ran across the field and headed straight down the Old Trafford tunnel.
Lacey later apologised for his actions and Fletcher made sure to throw his backing behind the youngster.
He added: ‘He’s disappointed because he cares and he understands and he knows he will learn from it.
‘There is no doubt about his talent and it was a steep learning curve today, but we believe in Shea.

‘He’s one of our most exciting young prospects and I’m sure at Old Trafford he will have a chance to make amends for that in the future.’
Posting on X, Lacey had said: ‘I want to apologise to all of my teammates, staff and the fans. I let everybody down tonight I shouldn’t let my emotions get the better of me. I will do everything I can to make this right.’
Speaking more widely on United’s display and another setback in a season where they are now out of all competitions bar the Premier League, Fletcher said: ‘Mixed performance. We started OK and then the goal knocked the stuffing out of us.
‘I challenged them at half-time to move the ball with tempo instead of just composure. When we got back to 2-1 I thought here we go, the crowd was up, the energy was up but we couldn’t get it over the line and get an equalising goal.
‘I think you could see the players are fragile but they’ve got to respond. Confidence is one of the most powerful things in football so when you don’t have it, you have to dig deep and then the confidence comes back.’
He continued: ‘It’s over to them, they need to make sure that they have got a lot to play for this season.
‘This team is still good enough to achieve success this season but they have to dig deep.
‘Out of cups, only Premier League games to play for, the fans weren’t happy at the end but they have got every right to air their grievances.
‘It wasn’t toxic but they showed their disappointment. I’m sure if the players show the right reaction, the fans will get behind them like they always do because there is still a lot to play for in the Premier League this season.’
United, who currently sit seventh, but are just three points off Liverpool in fourth, return to action when they host arch-rivals Man City next Saturday.
