An 8-year-old Arizona girl who vanished on Thursday has been found dead, officials said on Friday.
Navajo police announced Maleeka Boone’s death, though they did not provide specifics aside from saying that their search came to an end in Coalmine. Boone was last on foot in the vicinity of Coalmine, near Coalmine Navajo Housing.
A Turquoise Alert was activated in this case because Boone is indigenous and Coalmine is located in the Navajo Nation. Navajo police said the FBI canceled the alert.
The FBI is involved in the ongoing investigation into Boone’s disappearance and death. A cause of death has not been disclosed, and it is unclear whether foul play is suspected.
“Details of when Maleeka Boone was last seen from her family and community members is still under investigation,” police said.
