83-Year-Old Ohio Man Convicted Of Fatally Shooting Uber Driver After Both Fall Victim To Deadly Scam

A jury has found an 83-year-old man from Ohio, William Brock, guilty of fatally shooting an Uber driver. The court heard that he believed the driver was trying to rob him after receiving a threatening phone call.

According to a report by AP News, a jury found Brock, 83, guilty of murder on January 14, 2026. Lo-Letha Toland-Hall, 61, an Uber driver, arrived at Brock’s home in March 2024 to collect a package. Brock reportedly responded by shooting Toland-Hall six times. He was convicted of murder, felonious assault, and kidnapping.

Per USA Today, the 83-year-old testified that he felt his life was in danger and fired his weapon in self-defense. He claimed he had received a phone call threatening his family and demanding money, and believed Toland-Hall was part of that scheme. Investigators reportedly said both parties fell victim to the same scam, a plot to obtain $12,000 in supposed bond money for a relative.

Brock claimed that scammers told him “whoever’s close to you will die,” according to WHIO. Toland-Hall arrived at Brock’s house to pick up a package. He reportedly said, “The woman came into my house. I was fighting for my life.”

USA Today reports that the scammers instructed the homeowner to deliver the money in a package to the driver of the car in his driveway. He reportedly held the Uber driver at gunpoint and demanded she reveal the identity of the caller.

Toland-Hall pleaded with Brock and tried to explain that she worked for Uber. The homeowner mistakenly thought she was there to rob him and opened fire. Emergency services rushed Toland-Hall to a local hospital, where she later died.

The suit reportedly states that Brock shot Toland-Hall multiple times before calling the emergency services. He told the dispatcher that he was the shooter and his victim was lying in his driveway. Per AP News, Brock testified that he felt threatened when the car arrived at his home. However, prosecutors argued that Toland-Hall was unarmed and posed no threat to the 83-year-old.

Clark County Prosecutor Daniel Driscoll reportedly said, “There are no winners here.” He added, “The really sad part of this is we know there are still criminals out there. We know that the scammers, the folks who started this, haven’t been brought to justice.” Driscoll said he hopes the FBI will find them so they can be prosecuted.

Following the guilty verdict, William Brock is set to be sentenced on January 21.
