Can you hear the wedding bells chime? It has officially been confirmed that the long-awaited sequel to the hit 2023 rom-com, Red, White & Royal Blue, has entered production. Titled Red, White & Royal Wedding, this second installment will see Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez return as Prince Henry and the first son of the U.S., Alex Claremont-Diaz, respectively, with both appearing in the official announcement video posted to social media, which you can watch below.
Featuring a sneak peek behind the scenes on the set of the sequel, the announcement video sees Galitzine and Perez, looking cozy in pajamas, welcoming back the movie’s millions of fans, with the latter clarifying they are “here for Bea’s wedding.” “We’re not getting married,” he adds, with Galitzine remarking, “That’s a long ways off at this point.” A jovial quashing of the whispered rumor of the pair’s wedding in this sequel was a smart way to let some fans down gently and encourage them to look forward with an open mind to what the second movie might bring.
What Will ‘Red, White & Royal Wedding’ Be About?
Of course, the first movie’s adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestselling 2019 novel leaves little to take from the sequel. With a clean canvas to paint on, although inspiration will be taken from a bonus chapter from the collector’s edition, director and co-writer Matthew López has a tough task to keep fans of the source material happy. Thankfully, he is joined by a stellar team behind-the-scenes, including McQuiston and Gemma Burgess in the writing department, with five-time Emmy nominee and Gilmore Girls alum Jamie Babbit directing. In a previous statement about the story for the sequel, López said:
“The movie is based on the novel, and the story ends at the end of the novel. And so I had Casey McQuiston come over to London, where I live, and we spent about a week just hammering out what a new story would look like. It was really exciting both to have Casey’s brain as the originator of these characters and of the story, and be able to sort of come up with your own fan fiction with the author of the novel.”
