The Chiefs are continuing to revamp their offensive coaching staff in the wake of hiring Eric Bieniemy
The Kansas City Chiefs‘ 2025 campaign was a failure to put it bluntly. After making it to at least the AFC Championship in each of the first seven seasons of Patrick Mahomes‘ career, the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs entirely this year, with Mahomes suffering a torn ACL late in the campaign that could force him to miss time early in 2026.
Mahomes will be back before you know it, though, and when he returns, Kansas City’s offense is going to look different. The Chiefs have already begun to revamp their offensive coaching staff, with old friend Eric Bieniemy returning to town to be Andy Reid‘s offensive coordinator again in 2026. And now that Bieniemy is back, K.C. has made several changes to its staff. After moving on from a handful of offensive staffers earlier this week, two more were let go on Tuesday night.
Chiefs Move on From Two More Offensive Coaches After Hiring Eric Bieniemy
Bieniemy previously spent 10 seasons working for the Chiefs, with the final five seeing him be Reid’s offensive coordinator. Bieniemy’s first season as offensive coordinator coincided with Mahomes’ first season as a starter for Kansas City, and those were generally considered to be the best years of his career so far.
While Mahomes led the Chiefs to the Super Bowl in his first two years without Bieniemy in 2023 and 2024, things went off the rails in 2025. Injuries didn’t help, but Mahomes had the majority of his offensive playmakers healthy for much of the season. Even before he tore his ACL, Kansas City was well on its way to missing the playoffs entirely.
This development has been a wake-up call for the team, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Bringing Bieniemy back should help, but he alone can’t fix this unit. That starts by revamping the coaching staff, and it appears Bieniemy has been given a say on what the rest of the offensive staff will look like, as assistant running backs coach Mike Deleone and offensive assistant Kevin Saxton are the latest two coaches who won’t be returning to the team in 2026.
“Two more departures from Chiefs coaching staff: Mark Deleone, assistant RBs coach last year, and Kevin Saxton, an offensive assistant,” Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star shared in a post on X.
Chiefs Hoping Eric Bieniemy Can Help the Offense Improve in 2026

Bieniemy was in charge of the Chiefs’ offense during their peak from Mahomes’ early days, but it’s worth noting the offense looked completely different back then. Tyreek Hill was leading the way at wide receiver, and Travis Kelce was in his prime. While guys like Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy are talented, they haven’t been able to consistently get on the same page as Mahomes.
Getting Mahomes more help across the board is going to be a key goal for the front office. His offensive line wasn’t all that great last season, and the lack of a rushing attack amplified a passing game that simply could not carry an offense on its own. If the front office can get the right pieces in place, Bieniemy could be able to work his magic and help Kansas City return with a vengeance next season.
