Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates scoring Liverpool's opener against Marseille on Wednesday

Liverpool hero Dominik Szoboszlai says he had been doing his homework and knew he had a chance of an under-the-wall free-kick goal as Marseille often do not have a so-called draft excluder.

The Reds made a giant step to the Champions League knockout stages with a fine away win in France, an own goal and substitute Cody Gakpo completing the victory.

But the pick of the bunch was Szoboszlai’s cheeky first-half free-kick, which was poked under the defensive wall with no one lying down to block it.

And the Hungarian said: ‘I did my homework. I got told that if nobody is laying down then maybe I can have a chance to hit it under the wall.

‘No-one was laying down so I tried it and, yeah, it worked out.’

Mohamed Salah was back in the team for Liverpool and Arne Slot was left delighted with his team finally, in his eyes, getting what they deserved from a match after a few draws despite creating a plethora of chances.

The boss said: ‘In the last 13 games unbeaten, we’ve only been 54 minutes behind. We had many earlier chances to win it today. Today, we probably deserve what we got. We weren’t unlucky like we’ve been so many times this season.

‘It’s always very difficult to play Marseille because of their passionate fans and the quality of their players, but what makes it even harder is the quality of their manager. We were prepared for that.

‘It says a lot about how big a professional (Salah) is that he can be away for more than a month with a different team (Egypt) and be so fit to play 90 for us after one day’s training. He was so close to a goal.

‘I saw a lot of individual performances tonight but I would like to single out Joe Gomez.

‘He has suffered a lot with injuries in the last few years and I haven’t picked him sometimes when he has been fit. Tonight he was outstanding and so important to us winning 3-0.’
