Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has given an update on the injury suffered by Bruno Guimaraes against PSV on Wednesday

Eddie Howe has revealed that Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes’ injury picked up against PSV in the Champions League is looking like ‘a worry’.

The central midfielder, who has been a key player for the Magpies this season, limped off the field towards the end of the first-half at St James’ Park with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

‘He’s a little bit sore and there’s a little bit of swelling around his ankle,’ Newcastle boss Howe said after the match. ‘We hope it’s not serious but it’s difficult to know.

‘It’s a worry that he’s had to come off.’

Lewis Miley was Guimaraes’ replacement, and the Brazilian’s side went onto win the match 3-0 courtesy of goals from Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes.

It leaves them with a chance of finishing in the top eight of the Champions League league phase, which they will achieve if they beat European Champions Paris Saint-Germain away from home next week.

Guimaraes has played 33 times in all competitions for Newcastle this season, proving to be a player that Howe can rely on in what has, at times, been a tough campaign.

He has scored eight goals and provided a further six assists, but could now be set for a spell on the sidelines.

The 28-year-old had initially gone down hurt five minutes before half-time, and appeared to signal to the bench that he needed to be replaced.

He soldiered on, however, until three minutes of stoppage time had passed and he could no longer continue.
