Harry Styles has recalled the unlikely chain of events that led to his viral appearance at St Peter’s Square in Rome following the announcement of the new Pope last year.

The singer, 31, sent fans wild in May after being spotted in the crowd as Pope Leo XIV delivered his first public remarks in his new position.

During an appearance on Greg James’s BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Friday, to promote his new album Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, Harry admitted he was actually in the Italian capital for a haircut and not for the conclave.

‘It happened, I was getting a haircut in Rome’ to which the host teased: ‘Long way to go for it.’

Harry went on: ‘Then I just heard all these people start shouting “Habemus Papam!” [We have a Pope!] and people just started running down the street’.

‘So the guy cutting my hair, stopped cutting my hair, and he was like “Habemus Papam! There’s a new Pope, there’s a new Pope!”‘

Luckily the hairdresser did eventually finish chopping the hitmaker’s barnet before he headed to join the crowds to witness the historic moment.

Harry then joked that the new head of the Catholic Church had upstaged his visit to Rome, laughing: ‘I was like “Who is this getting all the attention?”‘

Elsewhere the singer, who has also announced a seven-city global residency tour for 2026 called Together, Together to coincide with his new album, admitted he needed to ‘fall in love with music all over again’ following a three year hiatus.

Speaking on Capital Breakfast with Jordan North, Chris Stark and Sian Welby, he said: ‘I think for me when I finished the last tour it was quite long and I think I got to the end of it and I felt like before I make another album, I really need a strong why of why I would be making another album.

‘The answer can’t just be “Well, I’ve finished the tour so now I’m going to make another album and then after that I do this and then I put it out and then I do another tour.”’ I think a lot of it for me was kind of paying a bit more attention to some of the other corners of my life that when I’ve been touring for long stretches, I haven’t always given that much attention to.

He continued: ‘So, I think for me it was a really important couple of years for me personally to kind of honestly just fall in love with music all over again and to kind of understand why being in a crowd is so special to people’.

Harry’s latest tour will see him  making 50 stops in Amsterdam, London, São Paulo, Mexico City, New York, Melbourne, and Sydney from May through December 2026.

But while promoting the gigs on Friday Harry got fans talking as he spoke with a noticeably American twang.

The former One Direction star, who grew up in Cheshire, appeared on Hits Radio to discuss his upcoming shows with some fans picking up on a change in his accent.

During his appearance, the singer chatted about finding old photos he took while touring with the band.

‘I’m really glad that I’ve done that. There’s pictures I find sometime that I find with One Direction that I forgot I’d taken,’ he said.

Fans quickly took to social media to comment on the change in his accent, with some writing: ‘He’s sounding American.’

‘Okay but where did his accent go?’… ‘His accent has really changed! He’s forgotten his rootes through his voice again!’

‘Is it just me or does Harry sound softer and has a slightly American accent now?’

Speaking about the residency, Harry said: ‘It feels really exciting [to be back]. It got to a point where I’d finished the album, I was living with it for a while and it was like OK the music’s ready, I feel really excited about it.

‘I’m excited to play it to people and that felt like a really good reason for the timing to be right for putting it out.’

And talking about setting the stage – Harry was asked did he really ‘Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.’

‘It’s a life mantra! It’s unhealthy to disco all the time so loving and moving through your life with love and then taking a break every now and again to have some fun is a really good way to approach your life,’ he said.

‘And I feel like that’s what I did for the last couple of years and it led to positive changes in my life so… You can probably stop [kissing] to eat and stuff – definitely an extended lunch break – and then right back to it… I spent a lot of time with Italians the last year or so and they’re kissing all the time so… it’s just art imitating life.’

Before he left Harry also shared some secrets about the tour planned for later this year… ‘The tour is just about having fun together and being together.

‘The feeling of me up here and you guys down there is a lot of what this album has been about trying to remove I think.

‘I want that to be the feeling with the tour as well. I want it to feel like I’m also here dancing with you, I’m here for the same thing that you’re here for…
