Police in California found Former NFL player Kevin Johnson dead Wednesday, at a Los Angeles homeless encampment, according to police.
Los Angeles County officials said authorities located Johnson, 55, at an encampment in the 1300 block of East 120th Street in the Willowbrook area, after responding to the scene shortly before 8 a.m., according to ABC 7.
First responders pronounced Johnson dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner stated Johnson had “blunt head trauma” and “stab wounds.”
Johnson’s death is being investigated as a homicide, The New York Times reports.
According to Newsweek Sports, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Steve De John stated that officials believe Johnson had been living at the homeless encampment at the time of his death.
“Unfortunately, it appears he was homeless,” Lt. Jong confirmed. “It looks like he was probably living there.”
Johnson’s friends said he likely had ongoing health issues from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), stemming from his football career, ABC 7 reported.
In 1995 and 1996, Johnson played for the Philadelphia Eagles as a defensive tackle. He later “played 15 games” for the Oakland Raiders in 1997, as a defense lineman.
After his NFL career, he played for the Orlando Predators and Los Angeles Avengers in the Arena Football League (AFL).
No suspect has been named at this time.
