In much the same way that ‘quiet luxury’ (read variations on beige, black and grey) has taken over fashion in recent years, so the pared-back, minimalist aesthetic has been very popular for interiors. From natural, tonal palettes (lovely) to all-grey interiors (eek), this takes many forms, but one thing it doesn’t do is satisfy those home décor magpies out there – the ones attracted to bright, colourful, shiny things.
Happily, a maximalist resurgence is taking place. We saw it in the form of deckchair stripes and sardine prints last summer, and now checkerboard patterns are making a major comeback in home décor.
At Dunelm’s recent spring/summer press show, guests were welcomed by checkboard tables, checkerboard armchairs and checkerboard rugs. There was even a side table that had an actual chess set built into its tabletop, so prevalent was the trend.
Of course this is not a brand new look – we’re all familiar with a black and white tiled floor – but you can introduce it in a fun variety of ways, from multicoloured checked hand towels to a statement piece of furniture. Here are some of our favourite checked interiors buys on the high street…
