The latest character to find their life on the line in the BBC hit Death In Paradise is Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson – whose exit from the show has seemingly been ‘confirmed’.

Initially arriving on the island to piece together his fractured family history, in the latest storyline turn, Mervin decides to travel to Antigua to visit his brother Solomon.

However, in a teaser at the end of the show’s most recent episode, it’s clear that something has gone very, very wrong for the inspector.

As the other police officers and the Commissioner are cleaning graffiti off a sign assuring the community that they can ‘count on’ their local law enforcement, DS Naomi Thomas rushes up to the Commissioner.

She ominously says: ‘Sir, I think something has happened to the inspector.’

The preview then cuts to a scene showing Mervin (played by Don Gilet) tied to a chair and desperately thrashing around in a bid to break free, before a simple ‘to be continued’ appears.

While Mervin’s stint on the island was meant to be a brief one, he found a reason to stay in the form of his half-brother, Solomon, who he decided to get to know.

However, the larger-than-life Solomon and the comparatively reserved Mervin initially struggle to find common ground.

Discussing the storyline, Don Gilet told the BBC: ‘The one thing he was in pursuit of at the start of this series was family and then to throw that in at the end, that he’s not alone…

‘He’s powerless to resist that and he has to stay now for the next chapter in his family quest, because he thought he had no family. So how can he turn his back on that?’

The actor admitted that the pair ‘couldn’t be more opposite’ and there’s more to it than just their different personalities.

He said: ‘There’s Mervin and then there’s this guy who is on the opposite side of the tracks, potentially the opposite side of the law too…

‘There’s just something that Mervin can’t quite put his finger on. He’s having to accept that whatever his notions were about what Solomon could be like, it might not be like that. Daniel Ward plays the character brilliantly.’

News of Mervin’s potential fate comes after fans were left perplexed by a plot hole at the start of a recent episode.

In the case, the Saint Marie police force investigated the baffling murder of a reclusive pensioner.

The team earlier posed in a photoshoot for an initiative intended to bolster public confidence in the police department.

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) was unimpressed with DI Mervin Wilson’s (Don Gilet) absence – and demanded to know his whereabouts.

Addressing this, DS Naomi Thomas explained: ‘We did try, sir. He said he’s only here short term so didn’t think it was his place. Also, apparently, football is on.’

To which the Commissioner fired back: ‘And presumably, the crime rate drops every time his team plays?’

Viewers were also left confused, as one wrote on X: ‘Mervin says he’s here short term when he’s been here a year already.’

Another commented: ‘Mervin is still only there short term? Huh?’

While a third echoed: ‘That’s news to me!’

Mervin debuted in the 2024 Christmas special as the replacement for Ralf Little’s character, DI Neville Parker.

Subsequently, he carried on as the show’s lead character into series 14, which aired in 2025.

Having remained for series 15 – and given the show has made reference to 2026, it would appear the detective has been on Saint Marie for some time now.

Mervin ultimately made it up to his colleagues by the end of the episode which aired on February 16 as he joined them for the photo.

Death in Paradise is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and continues at 9pm on BBC 1
