One musician is opening up about being compared to Taylor Swift with her debut album, but she beat Swift in the end.

Taylor Swift is on top of the world, since not only are she and Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs planning a wedding together, but Swift also has career news in that she’s releasing a new single from her 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” on Tuesday, March 10.

The new single is the album track “Elizabeth Taylor,” and the song arrives at radio on March 10. If “Elizabeth Taylor” follows in the tradition of the first two singles off “The Life of a Showgirl,” which are “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite,” it will become another chart-topper for the musician.

But, amid all the excitement and good news, Swift is getting in the spotlight for a bit of negative attention. Don’t worry, it’s nothing too bad, but it’s taking the attention of Swift and “Elizabeth Taylor” for a minute.

Musician Recalls Getting Compared to Taylor Swift in a Negative Way as New Single Off ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ Drops

“The Life of a Showgirl” is the latest of Swift’s albums to skyrocket to the top of the Billboard charts. In a review of the album for Billboard, Jason Lipshutz says that the best word to describe the songs on the album are that they’re “bangers.”

“That’s the word Taylor Swift used to describe all 12 songs on her twelfth studio album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl, and the world knew what that meant,” Lipshutz states in the review. He adds that while Swift’s last album “may have scored the superstar’s biggest opening-week debut and ruled the charts for months on end,” at the same time, “the sprawling, relatively mournful project was a departure from the immaculately constructed pop anthems that had defined her career.”

Lipshutz continues in the review, noting that “instead of coming back with party tracks, Swift has synthesized the commitment to pristine hooks that she shares with Martin and Shellback, an increasingly idiosyncratic lyrical slant, and the mid-thirties perspective of her past few albums.”

But, let’s go back a few years. Back in 2022, Taylor Swift released the album “Midnights,” and it happened to be around the same time as SZA released her blockbuster “SOS.”

Musician Was Told She ‘Wouldn’t Beat Taylor Swift’ With Her Debut Album, But She Did

Now, in a fresh cover story interview for i-D‘s The Lore Issue out on Friday, March 6, SZA states that her record label flat-out told her that “SOS” wouldn’t make it to No. 1 because of Swift.

“My label told me that it was likely that I wouldn’t beat Taylor Swift, and I should prepare for that,” SZA said, referring to the chart rivalry between “SOS” and Swift’s “Midnights.” SZA added, “I was laughing by week three. It was just like, ‘What is this? I never even imagined I could be on the radio.’”

So, SZA’s label was wrong, and her album spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. At the time, it prevented Swift from being No. 1. So, whenever Swift decides to release her 13th studio album, she’ll likely make sure to avoid any SZA window.
