Gwyneth Paltrow shades stars who dress in 'costume' for the Met Gala

Gwyneth Paltrow doesn’t treat the Met Gala like a costume party.

Reflecting on her favorite-ever red carpet looks, the Goop founder included a few turns on the Metropolitan Museum of Art steps — and dredged up some of her negative feelings for the event (I have sort of a love-hate relationship with the Met Ball that’s well documented,” she wrote).

“I’m me — so I’m never going to the Met Ball in like, a hot dog costume or whatever, you know?,” she said. “I always have to be myself, first and foremost. Like, I’m not going in a costume; I’m going in a dress.”

The actress explained, “There’s two camps who go to the Met Ball — the costume or the evening dress. And I’m always going to be an evening dress person.”

Widely referred to as the “Oscars of Fashion,” the exhibit’s theme dictates the dress code for the evening, with A-listers interpreting the theme.

In 2019, Katy Perry embraced “Notes on Camp” dressed as a chandelier and, later, a hamburger. For 2023’s red carpet, which honored the life and legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, Doja Cat transformed into the late designer’s feline, Choupette, with the help of prosthetics.

Paltrow, for her part, went “Valley of the Dolls” in 2019 in a yellow Chloé dress she called “like a lemon chiffon pie.”

And her favorite look of all time was the high-low Prada halter look she wore in 2012, recalling that the mini was meant to be paired with a skirt, which she eschewed for the night.

Though the 2012 outfit is her favorite red carpet moment of all time, she perhaps didn’t have much fun at the event. In 2013 she told USA Today of the event, “It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all.”

However, the “Marty Supreme” star returned four years later.

Paltrow isn’t the only one who has spoken publicly about their disdain for the event, with Amy Schumer, Demi Lovato and more sharing their disappointment for all to hear.

No matter what, they just can’t seem to quit the event, though. Even Lena Dunham, who wrote in 2016 that “it was like a crazy countdown to when we could escape,” is on the Met Gala Host Committee this year.

We hope to see Paltrow on the first Monday in May.
