Police have identified the body of a headless and handsless man found on a remote stretch of road in southwestern New York State in 1970.
New York State Police said DNA led to the identification of 35-yea-rold Clyde A. Coppage, who was living in Genessee, Pennsylvania, when he disappeared.
He was not originally from the area and was never reported missing.
The body was found on March 20, 1970, in the village of Andover, about 16 miles north of Genessee.
Police exhumed the body in 2022, and state police and the FBI began the work of using DNA to identify the victim.
Trooper James O’Callaghan told the Albany Times Union that Coppage was nude when he was found and that evidence suggested he was killed and dismembered elsewhere and dumped along Davis Hill Road.
Investigators have not released a cause of death but have asked anyone with information about Coppage or his death to contact New York State Police at 585-344-6200.
