IMPACT: Renewed scrutiny on state policies allowing illegal immigrants to obtain commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs).
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested Sukhdev Singh, an illegal immigrant truck driver accused of causing a crash that left a U.S. citizen in critical condition in Indianapolis, Indiana. The incident occurred on March 6 at E Raymond Street and I-65, where Singh allegedly struck a pedestrian.
Indiana State Police responded to the scene and took Singh into custody, contacting ICE when they discovered the truck driver was an illegal immigrant. ICE officials later confirmed Singh’s arrest and stated that he will remain in custody pending the outcome of his immigration proceedings. The victim was transported to a local hospital and remains in critical condition as of the latest update.
Singh, who held a commercial driver’s license (CDL) issued by Democrat-run New York, has drawn renewed attention to state policies regarding the issuance of CDLs to illegal immigrants. The National Pulse reported last December that U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean Duffy had warned New York it could lose $73 million in federal highway funding following a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) audit which revealed that 53 percent of sampled CDLs issued by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) were unlawfully granted to foreign nationals residing in the U.S. illegally.
In February, the Trump administration moved to shut down an estimated 8,000 sham truck driving schools that served as conduits for illegal immigrants to obtain CDLs. The FMCSA has found that, in that month alone, 550 CDL truck driving schools and training facilities violated its standards.
“It is common sense: illegal aliens should not be operating 18-wheelers on American highways,” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement, continuing, “We are praying this individual makes a full recovery. It is incredibly dangerous for illegal aliens, who often don’t know our traffic laws or even English, to be operating 18-wheelers on America’s roads.”
“Sanctuary governors like Kathy Hochul must stop giving illegal aliens driver’s licenses before even more Americans get injured or killed,” Bis added.
