Linda French, the baby girl's grandmother, said the toddler should have never been left alone with the dog

A five-day-old Michigan baby girl was killed by her family’s pet dog in a brutal attack, her heartbroken grandmother revealed.

The infant, who has only been identified as Freya, died Tuesday morning after suffering ‘puncture wounds’ coming from an animal attack, according to the Novi Police Department.

Officers and firefighters responded at 8:28am to a home in the 42000 block near 13 Mile Road and Novi Road after a family member found Freya.

The baby’s grandmother, Linda French, said she never got the chance to meet the toddler.

‘That baby should have never been left alone,’ French told WXYZ.

French said the family took the dog in a few months ago and that they ‘didn’t know where he came from.’

She added that Freya’s parents had been left along with the dog in a bassinet-type bed when she was fatally attacked.

‘Sorry to say that about my stepson but those kids don’t belong there,’ French said. ‘God, it kills me.’

The dog was described as being a mixed breed of average size.

French claimed the canine had acted aggressively towards her before, as she choked up over Freya’s death.

‘The dog comes sniffing, but then he lunged at me,’ she added.

The dog was taken to the Oakland County Animal Control on Tuesday and humanely euthanized on Wednesday.

To date, no charges have been filed in connection to Freya’s death, and police have not said who was inside the home at the time of the fatal attack.

The girl’s father revealed off-camera that the dog somehow got a hold of his daughter while she was in her bassinet, WXYZ reported.

Freya’s other grandmother said she was not home when the dog attacked the toddler, but said she had talked to her son about the horrific ordeal.

‘He came out briefly and told me the bassinet was there and the baby was asleep in it and the dog who they raised around other kids, for some reason, knocked the bassinet over,’ the grandmother, who only identified herself as Ellyn, told FOX 2.

The dog then ‘killed the baby’ before Freya’s father was able to intervene, she added.

‘He thinks the dog did it just to attack the baby,’ Ellyn told the outlet.

‘But the dog’s been raised with … other toddlers in there,’ she added. ‘So we don’t know what actually happened other than the dog snapped out right in front of everyone.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Novi Police Department and Linda French for further comment.
