Axed Channel Nine presenter Amber Sherlock has made the bombshell claim she was pushed out of the network because of her age

Axed Channel Nine presenter Amber Sherlock has made the bombshell claim she was pushed out of the network because of her age.

The long-time 9News anchor and weathergirl, who was let go by Nine in November just weeks before her 50th birthday, told the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About that she believes she was aged out of the network.

‘I always joked that Channel Nine wouldn’t have a 50-year-old weather presenter. Who knew I was being prophetic?’ Sherlock sniped.

‘It’s disappointing. I feel like women in their 50s have so much to give, but even though we’ve come so far [in this industry], there aren’t many women over 50 in full-time camera-facing roles on Australian TV.

‘I wasn’t on the huge salaries that perhaps some of the stars were making. So I don’t think it was a financial reason. It’s unfortunate. I think the people that have gone on and are stepping into the role I was doing are 10 to 15 years younger than me.’

However, a Nine spokesperson told Yahoo Lifestyle that Sherlock’s dismissal had nothing to do with her age but rather with a restructuring of operations.

The long-time 9News anchor and weathergirl, who was let go by Nine in November just weeks before her 50th birthday , told the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About that she believes she was aged out of the network

‘Nine does not discriminate against any individual on the basis of age or any other factor,’ they began.

‘We strongly reject any suggestion that this influences any decision to remove a role that is no longer required in our business.

‘The dedicated role of the 6pm weather presenter for 9News Sydney was made redundant in November 2025.

‘Since then, a number of different reporters and presenters have presented the 6pm weather in addition to filling other roles across the network.’

Channel Nine continues to employ several high-profile women who are over 50, including Getaway stars Catriona Rowntree, 54, and Livinia Nixon, 51, and A Current Affair presenter Deborah Knight, 53.

In November, Sherlock took a dig at Nine when she spoke publicly for the first time since her shock exit from the network was confirmed.

In a sensational off-script moment, newsreader Georgie Gardner confirmed the veteran’s departure when she offered an unexpected farewell to her axed colleague.

Sherlock later broke her silence, sharing a lengthy message on Instagram as she hit back at Nine’s recent string of layoffs.

‘Nearly 20 years anywhere is a milestone, but to be in your lounge rooms every evening has been a privilege,’ she began.

‘From my early days as a finance journalist, to reading the Qantas news and becoming the inaugural newsreader for Weekend Today, I’ve been fortunate to present across almost every bulletin including the Morning News, Afternoon News, 6pm News and Late News.

‘Most recently, I’ve been part of the 6pm Sydney news team alongside Peter Overton and James Bracey.’

Sherlock included a photo alongside her message, showing her smiling as she posed with co-stars Peter Overton and James Bracey behind the news desk.

‘Together, we’ve proudly won the ratings for the last 15 years, a testament to the Sydney news team,’ she added.

‘I’ve enjoyed 30 years in Australian television built on hard work, grit and resilience and have always believed that dedication pays off.

‘While I was offered the possibility of a few other roles, it makes sense to step away now and look at something fresh.’
