A former Bayern Munich sporting director believes Pep Guardiola will leave Man City this summer, suggesting his facial expression suggest 'something is wrong'

A former Bayern Munich sporting director believes Pep Guardiola will step down from Manchester City this summer, after suggesting ‘something is wrong’ after observing the Spaniard.

Guardiola is currently contracted to Man City until 2027, but there has been continued speculation he could yet call time on his decade long spell at the club this summer.

Daily Mail Sport revealed this month that Guardiola is expected to decide what is best for him and Man City during the break between their Carabao Cup final triumph over Arsenal and the resumption of the season after the international break.

Matthias Sammer, who worked with Guardiola during his three seasons at Bayern Munich, has suggested the Spaniard should step down this summer to recover his energy.

Sammer claimed that while the Carabao Cup triumph suggested ‘everything is supposedly okay again’ at Man City, he believes Guardiola’s facial expressions have shown that something is wrong.

‘Well, first of all, I was very happy for him. We worked together wonderfully for three years; it was very, very good,’ Sammer said on Sky Germany’s Sammer and Basile – the Hagedorn Talk.

‘I think I understood him quite well with his facial expressions, his gestures, his eyes, and his way of speaking.

‘My gut feeling tells me something’s wrong when I look at his face.’

Sammer, the 1996 Ballon d’Or winner turned football executive, appeared to reference Guardiola’s recent frustrations at criticism of his team selections.

Guardiola claimed earlier this month that he has been ‘massacred’ for his selections in the Champions League, after Man City were knocked out by Real Madrid in the last 16.

Sammer, who now works as a part-time advisor to Bayern Munich as well as a pundit, expressed his hope that Guardiola decided to walk away from Man City in the summer, urging him to get his strength and energy back.

‘When I see your eyes, when I see your face, and in other ways too, you really don’t need to explain to clueless people what you are and who you are, and that you can’t always win,’ Sammer continued.

Man City remain in the hunt for the Premier League title, but are currently nine points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

Guardiola’s side do have a game in hand on the Gunners and will welcome them to the Etihad next month in a potentially pivotal fixture.

Man City will also face Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

While doubts remain over Guardiola’s future, the Man City boss suggested his side would be ‘better’ next season in his post-match comments following the Carabao Cup triumph.
