There are few ingredients as hyped in the world of skincare as retinol – but that can make trying it for the first time all the more daunting.

Yes, its benefits are vast. Hailed as the ‘gold standard’ when it comes to anti-ageing ingredients, it’s a cheap, non-surgical solution to fine lines that simultaneously boosts collagen and accelerates skin cell turnover.

The result? Improved skin texture and firmness, a reduction in fine lines, faded hyperpigmentation and even less persistent acne.

If this sounds too good to be true, it’s worth pointing out that retinol doesn’t come without its challenges.

If not properly managed, it can lead to redness, dryness and a compromised skin barrier – but this only tends to happen if the strength is unsuitable for your complexion, or if you’re combining it with other potent active ingredients, such as exfoliating acids, Vitamin C skincare at high concentrations or harsh scrubs.

However, with the right precautions and figuring out the right retinol for your skin type, the results of retinol can be truly transformative – and in my opinion, it should be at the centre of everyone’s nighttime routine.

I’ve tested dozens of retinols from an array of different brands and price points to ensure there’s an option that’s right for you, so save yourself the trial and error and peruse this quality-assured shortlist instead.

Best retinols: Quick list

How we test

When testing beauty products, we try each product out for at least a week to account for both first impressions and daily wear.

For serums like retinol, this includes keeping all additional skincare steps (cleansers, moisturisers, SPF etc) the same as control variables, so we can credit any changes to the skin specifically with the retinol.

We tested retinols from a range of different brand and across a variety of price points to ensure there's a great option within your budget

Of course not everyone has the same skin type so bear in mind these products have been put to the test on a combination complexion, rather than excessively oily, acne-prone or dry, which may react differently.

Q+A Retinol Facial Serum

Q+A Retinol Facial Serum

What we love

  • Gently does itThe squalane and bisabolol in this formula soothe and moisturise the skin, ensuring no irritation while the retinol gets to work

  • Value for moneyYou’re not going to find a better retinol serum for £12.50 – this is unbeatable on price

  • Easy applicationThe product spreads easily thanks to its silky texture and just one pump will cover your whole face

Review

If you’re looking for a retinol that won’t break the bank, you won’t do better than this serum from Q+A.

Containing 0.2% Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate, this low-irritation grade of retinoid is paired with moisturising squalane and bisabolol to protect your skin barrier, all while providing the youth-boosting benefits you’d expect from a retinol product.

I found the creamy consistency to be silky, not sticky, making it easy to spread over the face evenly with just a single pump.

I experienced absolutely zero irritation or skin peeling, even when using this after shaving my face, which is testimony to how gentle the product is.

In fact, I’d say you can get away with using this by night and a Vitamin C serum by day for the ultimate anti-ageing duo.

It’s fair to say that if you’re after serious potency you may find that this serum falls short, but you’ll be hard pushed to find a better retinol for £12.50.

As with all Q+A products, this is made in the UK, cruelty free and vegan free, so ethical shoppers can rest easy.

Blue Lagoon BL+ Retinol Cream 0.3%

Blue Lagoon BL+ Retinol Cream 0.3%

What we love

  • Smooth operatorMy skin didn’t just look better after using this, it FELT better too, with any uneven texture all but eliminated

  • Collagen kickstarterThe brand’s BL+ complex simultaneously stimulates collagen synthesis and prevents collagen breakdown, all while strengthening the skin barrier

Review

Blue Lagoon products are all about restoring collagen to the skin – thanks to the brand’s propriety BL+ complex that deeply targets signs of ageing, while still protecting the skin barrier.

Drawing from an Icelandic geothermal spa, the company cultivates microalgae and silica on site, which is blended into the formula alongside Vitamin A at a potent 0.3%.

Because of its strength, I’d steer clear of this if you have sensitive skin and would recommend coming to this product once you’ve tried out a weaker, entry-level retinol first.

However, once your skin can tolerate it, you will love the results.

By the time I’d used about half of the bottle my skin didn’t just look fresher and more even, it also felt bouncier and smoother to the touch.

I also noticed a reduction in skin congestion, with barely any new blemishes or blackheads forming over the period I used the product.

The texture of this serum was initially thicker than I expected, but melted down to a more watery consistency upon contact with the skin, making it incredibly easy to apply.

Plus the thick, glass bottle feels luxurious in the hand and looks incredibly chic in my bathroom cabinet.

At £130 this is the most expensive retinol on the list and I hold pricey products to a higher standard, but my skin absolutely lapped this up, so there’s no way I couldn’t include it.

Byoma Sensitive Retinol Oil

Byoma Sensitive Retinol Oil

What we love

  • Barrier boostCeramides and skin-identical lipids mean this oil soothes the skin barrier and halts potential irritation or redness in its tracks

  • Beginner friendlyWhether you have sensitive skin or are just brand new to retinols this moisturising oil is a fantastic place to start, giving you skin a chance to acclimatise to Vitamin A

  • Pocket friendly£18 is a fantastic price point for such a sophisticated product, especially considering how you only need a few drops to cover your whole face, meaning one bottle will last for months

Review

If your sensitive skin has left you quaking with fear at the thought of trying out retinol, this gentle wonder could be the answer to your prayers.

Packed full of ceramides and skin identical lipids to protect your skin barrier, this formula is ideal for anyone prone to dryness, redness or irritation.

Deeply hydrating squalane helps the formula glide over the skin and leaves your complexion feeling bouncy and moisturised.

This is also a fantastic product to try if you’re brand new to retinol, as it gives you skin a chance to acclimatise to Vitamin A before working up to something more potent.

Given the oil base of this serum, I felt more like I was applying some kind of hydrating serum than a retinol, with absolutely zero tightness or flaking, which can happen with more potent products.

In fact, my skin still felt quenched the morning after use.

A huge part of BYOMA’s brand philosophy is about preserving a healthy skin barrier, and I can say with certainty that this retinol delivers just that, all while brightening and firming the complexion.

Skin Diligent CEL Retinal Serum

Skin Diligent CEL Retinal Serum

What we love

  • Youth in a bottleWith a double-pronged approach to boosting collagen, both by increasing production in the skin and preventing degradation, this packs a serious anti-ageing punch

  • Suitable for allWhether you’re dry, oily a pensioner or a teen, this adaptive serum is formulated to work wonders on your skin

  • Light as airThe ultra-light consistency of this serum means it spreads easily, is instantly absorbed and layers fantastically well under a night cream

Review

This has got to be one of the most high-tech serums my face has ever been graced with.

Alongside 0.15% encapsulated retinal, this formula contains the brand’s cellular epigenetic longevity complex. ‘Huh?!’ I hear you say.

In layman’s terms, it supercharges collagen in you skin, both by boosting the production of it from within you skin, and be preventing to production of the enzymes that attack your collagen reserves.

What this means for your face, over time, is reduced fine lines, refined skin texture and a more radiant, unified skin tone.

I loved how light this felt on the skin upon application and found it layered fantastically well under a heavy duty night cream.

I found it worked wonders on some small patches of uneven texture on my cheeks and also made the pores appear considerably smaller.

The product is safe for teens, acne-prone complexions and is free from fragrance and preservatives to boot.

If this all sounds too good to be true, the only slight downside is the price. At £74 it’s certainly on the pricier side, but there’s a reason it’s one of the brand’s best sellers.

This Works Deep Sleep 5% Retinoid Complex

This Works Deep Sleep 5% Retinoid Complex

What we love

  • Scent-sationalThe stunning blend of lavender, camomile and vetivert has soporific properties, making it perfect for bedtime

  • Cushion the blowThe Vitamin E and hyaluronic acid in this product ensure you awake to smooth, hydrated skin without any dreaded flaking or peeling

  • Beginner friendlyThe 5% granactive retinoid in this product causes less irritation than retinol or retinal, making it ideal for those just starting their Vitamin A journey

Review

This overnight serum uses granactive retinoid, a more easily tolerated form of retinol, meaning you don’t have to worry about the dreaded peeling or flaking that can come with harsher formulations.

Teamed with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E for added moisturising benefits, you can expect to wake with smoother, more hydrated skin the morning after use.

The lightweight, milky texture is a dream to apply, gliding over the skin and sinking in quickly.

What also struck me was the incredible fragrance of the product – a blend of lavender, camomile and vetivert, which reminded me of the brand’s famous pillow spray, renowned for its soporific properties.

Unlike some other retinol products, this is totally safe to use use every night and I even found on days when I had shaved it caused no tightness or redness whatsoever.

If you’re taking your first steps into the world of retinol, this foolproof formula would be a great place to start.

Just be sure to wear an SPF the following day so you don’t undo all the anti-ageing benefits from the night before!

6. Best high-strength retinol: ESK Ultimate A+

ESK Ultimate A+

ESK Ultimate A+

What we love

  • Instant renewalI noticed improved skin tone, clarity and texture within a week or starting this product – expect quick results

  • Blemish busterThis is a great pick for those with oily or acne-prone skin, with niacinamide and glycolic acid simultaneously smoothing and soothing the complexion

What could be better

  • ExpensiveYes, this is one of the most expensive products on the list – £83 may feel prohibitive to some, regardless of the results

Review

This night cream is an absolute powerhouse when it comes to skin renewal and is best suited to those experienced with Vitamin A.

Containing retinal, which works up to 11 times faster than retinol, along with glycolic acid and niacinamide, this formula will make light work of congested, dull skin by kicking your cell renewal into overdrive.

Those with oily or acne-prone skin will love how this shrinks blemishes, reduces the appearance of pores and evens out both skin tone and texture.

While it’s non-comedogenic and free from essential oils, sulphates and parabens, I still wouldn’t recommend this to anyone with sensitive skin.

I didn’t experience any peeling or flaking from this product but did feel a slight tingle upon application, which to someone with a more delicate complexion could be bad news.

However the payoff was some of the best skin clarity I’ve ever had in my life. Once I’d applied my moisturiser and SPF the following day, I believe I came the closest I’ve ever come to boasting ‘glass skin’ – or to those who haven’t heard the expression before, the phenomena of smooth, light-reflective skin.

I was struck by the bright yellow hue of the cream. Be sure to let the product fully soak in before hitting the pillow, unless you want stained bedding.

The instructions also advise using this on the neck, décolletage, forearms and back of the hands to tackle historic sun damage, which I’ll be trying next.

Yes this is pricey at £83, but this yielded some of the fastest visible results of all the products I tried.

Medik8 Crystal Retinal

Medik8 Crystal Retinal

What we love

  • CustomisableWith SO many strengths to choose from this is truly a product that evolves with you as you acclimatise to retinal at incremental concentrations

  • Balancing actThe hyaluronic acid, glycerin and Vitamin E in these formula helps prevent the dreaded dryness and peeling that is often associated with retinal use

  • Shine brightI noticed brighter, more even skin by the time I’d finished my first bottle, along with an improvement in texture too

Review

No, that’s not a typo – this serum contains retinAL rather than retinOL. The difference? Retinal works up to 11 times faster than retinol because your skin converts it into retinoic acid more quickly, delivering more potent results.

However, beginners shouldn’t be scared off. What’s particularly fantastic about this range is that it’s entirely customisable, with products labelled from 1-20 in keeping with their strength, meaning you can find a concentration that works for you, factoring in your skin sensitivity and experience with the ingredient.

Medik8 recommends using a full tube before moving up to a higher strength, so that your skin has a chance to adjust.

The brand also advises using this serum just twice a week to begin with for the first fortnight, before moving to alternate nights for another fortnight, and then to nightly.

I followed this method using serums 1, 2 and 3 and my skin have noticed a marked improvement in my skin tone and texture. In fact, I’ve sworn off using exfoliating acids since starting with this as I no longer worry about visible pores and blackheads.

All the serums in the range contain hyaluronic acid, glycerin and Vitamin E to hydrate the skin, which is always a nice touch given the potential for retinal to dry out or irritate the skin.

For maximum skin comfort I like to layer a ceramide-heavy cream over the top of this to protect my skin barrier.

Roc Derm Correxion Firming Serum Stick

Roc Derm Correxion Firming Serum Stick

What we love

  • Stick with itThe solid balm formula makes for super easy application anywhere on the body, with an easily-absorbed consistency

  • Body beautifulI loved the results not just on my face and neck, but on my sun-damaged arms, which have keratosis pilaris – those tiny, annoying bumps so many of us battle

  • Smoothed and soothedAntioxidants and THPE leave you skin feeling quenched and tightened with no irritation

Review

Resembling a stick of deodorant at first glance, this solid serum stands out from the crowd – and is much more than just a gimmick.

With a fuss-free application that involves twisting up a rounded ‘dome’ of product and applying it directly to the skin, there’s no risk of overapplying, and therefore wasting any product.

As soon as it makes contact with your skin the balm melts down into a silky serum that immediately quenches wherever it touches.

Along with retinol, this formula contains antioxidants and THPE to smooth skin and improve elasticity, which is why the brand brags about effects akin to a non-surgical face lift.

I’m not sure I’d go quite that far, but my skin definitely felt smoother and firmer after a couple of weeks of regular use.

The product is advertised for use on the face and neck, but I also loved applying it my arms, where I have historic sun damage and keratosis pilaris I’m waging war on.

It’s fast absorbing, meaning there’d no issue with it sticking to your clothes after application, as well as non-comedogenic, so you don’t have to worry about it blocking pores.

Zero fragrance also minimises the risk of irritation for those with sensitive skin.

I’ve already got a second one of these in my cabinet for when the first runs out and certainly won’t be neglecting my neck when it comes to retinol going forward.

Dr. Different VITALIFT-A Fortessimo 0.15% Retinal

Dr. Different VITALIFT-A Fortessimo 0.15% Retinal

What we love

  • SuperchargedA maximum-strength version of the brand’s original, this contains THREE times the concentration of retinal for speedy results

  • Skin soothingSqualane, hyaluronic acid and safflower seed oil ensure you don’t suffer from the dreaded peeling and flaking that can come with retinol use

  • Tightened upI felt like I’d used a gua sha after a month of using this, with improving skin firmness and lift

Review

K-beauty brands are often at the forefront of skincare innovation, so it’s no surprise to see Korea’s Dr. Different delivering when it comes to retinol.

This supercharged version of the brand’s bestelling VITALIFT-A cream contains three times the concentration of retinal in the original – which itself is 11 times stronger than retinol.

Packing 0.15% of the skin-rejuvenating ingredient, along with 0.08% Retinol and Retinyl Palmitate, this product is best adopted once you have a bit of experience with Vitamin A under your belt and your skin is suitably acclimatised.

Fortunately there’s also squalane, hyaluronic acid and safflower seed oil in the mix to moisturise, soothe and plump the skin, making this cream a fantastic all-rounder.

The gel-like, non-sticky texture makes glides over the skin for easy application – and don’t let the yellow tint alarm you, I found as long as I left a few minutes for the product to sink in, it didn’t transfer onto my pillowcase at all.

As for the results, I experienced no skin irritation whatsoever and noticed after a month of use that the sun spots on my face were less pronounced and my fine lines were even slightly less noticeable.

My face also felt slightly tighter – the kind of feeling you have after a bout of lymphatic drainage with a gua sha.

To top it all off, £37 puts this in a middle-market price range, when the results are anything but middling.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Night Cream

What we love

  • Pure luxuryThe glossy packaging and heavenly scent make this product feel like a decadent treat before it has even hit your skin

  • Moisture bombThe Vitamin E, coenzyme Q10, plant stem cells and red algae marigel instantly leave your complexion quenched and glowing

What could be better

  • Big spenderAt £100, this will likely be reserved as a rare treat, rather than a staple, for many shoppers

Review

If you prefer a cream to a serum and don’t fancy layering up stacks of products before bed, this one-stop shop is a great, albeit slightly decadent, option.

This retinol-based night cream is infused with winter daphne stem cell extract and red algae marigel for additional rejuvenation.

Meanwhile coenzyme Q10 supports skin repair and Vitamin E nourishes and conditions, ensuring your face feels drenched in moisture when it hits the pillow.

That being said, I’d recommend applying this at least 15 minutes before bedtime so it has a chance to absorb into your skin and doesn’t end up getting wasted on your bedding.

As per all Charlotte Tilbury wares, the packaging oozes luxury, with a thick glass pot and metallic lid which looks more like an ornament than skincare.

The scent adds to the experience, with a gorgeous waft of sweet jasmine hitting me as soon as I opened the jar, reminiscent of an expensive spa day.

I absolutely loved how this made my skin feel and awoke in the morning with far more glowing, plumped-up complexion than I’m used to.

At £100 this is definitely a splurge and no doubt will feel prohibitively expensive for many, but if you feel like treating yourself or are on the lookout for a particularly fancy gift for a skincare lover, this is a great option.

Green People Age Defy+ Retinal Booster Serum

Green People Age Defy+ Retinal Booster Serum

What we love

  • Scent-sationalThe blend of camphor wood, ylang ylang, palmarosa and lavender makes for a sensorial treat upon application

  • Balancing actWith retinal at a concentration 0.05% this serum strikes the perfect balance between anti-ageing potency and gentleness on the skin

  • Skin quencherHyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate, aloe vera and rosehip oil hydrate and soothe the skin overnight, leaving you with a plump, bouncy complexion by morning

Review

Green People’s retinal (an ingredient 11 times stronger than retinol) manages to pack a serious anti-ageing punch without causing any skin irritation whatsoever, which is no mean feat.

Thanks to a hearty dose of hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and rosehip oil, this serum juggles increasing cell turnover with hydrating and smoothing properties, making it tough on fine lines, but never on your skin barrier.

With a concentration of 0.05% retinal, you shouldn’t experience any flaking or peeling, but I’d still advise against applying it around the eyes and lips.

For an extra buffer, I’d be sure to follow up with a nourishing night cream a few minutes after it has had a chance to sink in.

I loved the milky texture of this serum, which spread easily over my entire face and neck with just a few drops.

I also adored the botanical scent – a blend of camphor wood, ylang ylang, palmarosa and lavender, which reminded me of fancy spa days.

As with all Green People products, this is made in the UK, is cruelty free, ethically sourced and vegan- so you can shop entirely free of guilt.

Our verdict

It’s impossible to pick just one winner from this list, namely because each product shines depending on your skin type, experience with Vitamin A and desired results.

If you’re a total newbie, my pick is the Byoma Sensitive Retinol Oil. It won’t break the bank at just £18, meaning if you decide the ingredient isn’t for you, you’re not massively out of pocket – but the delightfully gentle formula is unlikely to cause you any problems and is a great way to dip your toe into retinol usage.

For the intermediate looking to ramp up their concentration of Vitamin A over time, the Medik8 Crystal Retinal would be my recommendation, allowing your to staircase your way through a range of concentrations in a safe, sustainable way.

However if you’re looking for maximum potency, the ESK Ultimate A+ really is tough to beat, providing impressive visible, long-term results for the experienced retinol user, the likes of which I’ve never experienced before.

FAQs

What strength of retinol should I start off with?

If you’re new to retinol it’s best not to overdo it by throwing yourself in the deep end with a super potent formula.

Starting with a low strength concentration of 0.1% and gradually working upwards from there once your skin has had a chance to acclimatise is a safe bet, moving up to 0.2% or 0.3% from there.

If you have sensitive skin, you should start with an even lower concentration – around the 0.05% mark.

How often should I use retinol and when should I apply it?

Retinol is best applied in the evening, before bed. When starting out, you may wish to apply it on alternate nights while you build some tolerance, before working up to every night.

After cleansing, let your skin dry completely before applying a thin layer of the serum, avoiding the delicate eye area. Applying retinol on damp skin risks unnecessary irritation, so is best avoided.

If you're new to retinol it's best to start off using it one or twice a week, before gradually building up to nightly use once your skin has acclimatised

Not every retinol comes as a serum - sticks, oils and night creams are also on the market

Not every retinol comes as a serum – sticks, oils and night creams are also on the market

At what age should I start using retinol?

While it may seems early, kicking off retinol use in your mid twenties is actually optimal. After 25 you skin begins to produce less collagen, so supplementing this with Vitamin A is a great way to future-proof your skin.

However, starting retinol too early, such as during one’s teens years, can damage the skin barrier, since it is still evolving during this time.

What active ingredients should I avoid while using retinol?

Any harsh exfoliants, such as scrubs, AHAs or BHAs should be avoided – as the boosted skin cell turnover that comes with retinol use means a higher risk of dryness, redness and a compromised skin barrier.

Vitamin C can have a similar effect, but if you use it exclusively in the morning, with retinol at night, you mitigate the risk of adverse effects.

You best bet is to team retinol with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramides, focusing on hydration and anti-inflammatory properties in your accompanying products.

What’s the difference between retinol and retinal?

Retinol and retinal are both Vitamin A derivatives and both boost collagen and increase cell turnover.

However, retinal works up to 11 times faster than retinol because it requires only one conversion step to become retinoic acid, whereas retinol requires two

As a result, retinal is considerably more potent and often better for oilier, acne-prone skin. Meanwhile retinol is more stable and less likely to cause irritation, making it a safer pick for for beginners or those with sensitive skin.
