Man arrested on suspicion of killing parents in shooting spree in Spain

At least two people were killed and four others seriously injured in a shooting in southern Spain, police said on Tuesday.

A 25-year-old man was detained by the Civil Guard on suspicion of killing his parents in El Ejido, Andalucía around 11pm on Monday night, a police spokesperson told The Independent.

Four other people – a man, a woman and two minors – were seriously injured in the shooting, police confirmed this morning, with a large presence still at the scene.

The Civil Guard said it was investigating the motive and circumstances of the attack, which local media reported occurred at a house in the El Canalillo neighbourhood.

One of the children injured in the attack is believed to be the suspect’s seven-month-old son and the other an 18-month-old baby, according to local reports. Authorities have not officially released the identities of the suspect and victims.

A 60-year-old man was undergoing surgery this morning after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head, according to La Voz de Almería.

Sources told El Mundo that the four people wounded in the attack were all hospitalised. Multiple medical teams were rushed to the scene to treat those with injuries.

The Civil Guard also sent members of its Rapid Action Group to respond and lead the investigation, local media reported. Officers from the national police and the local police were deployed.

The suspect fled and was arrested a few hours later, apparently in the centre of El Ejido, according to public broadcaster Canal Sur.

Sources close to the investigation told the outlet that the Civil Guard responded to reports of gunshots in El Canalillo around 11.15pm, finding two people deceased inside a car.

One of the injured adults was taken to a hospital in El Ejido, while the other was taken with the children to a hospital in nearby Almería, health officials said.
