Jason Momoa's $440M Sci-Fi Fantasy Movie Trending On Prime Video Officially Marks The End Of An Era

Jason Momoa has a major hit on Prime Video right now, and it comes at the perfect time, given how the film marks the end of an era for the actor and a huge franchise. Momoa is one of the most charismatic actors in Hollywood, and he brings along the physical prowess to make him the perfect casting choice for multiple action franchises.

The long list of Momoa movies and shows includes franchises like The Fast and the Furious, Dune, Baywatch, Minecraft, Game of Thrones, Stargate, DC, and more. Momoa’s role in some of those has ended, while he is only getting started in others, and will soon see a major ending in the form of the final movie in one of the best sci-fi franchises of all time.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three brings back Momoa as a new character, Hayt, a clone of the deceased Duncan Idaho. While the Dune franchise’s finale will be a big one in the actor’s career, his most successful franchise role in theaters came in the DCEU movie franchise, where he played Aquaman. That shared universe ended, but it is seeing an encore.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Momoa’s final movie as Aquaman, is experiencing a streaming resurgence. The film was released in theaters back on December 22, 2023, going on to achieve a solid box office total of $440.2 million. With a reported budget of $205 million, it needed between $410 million and $512.5 million to break even. The Aquaman sequel was not a hit, but it is now.

Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom Has Become A Streaming Hit 3 Years Later

A little over two years since the film graced the silver screen, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrived on Prime Video in the United States on May 27. The DC movie went on to become an instant streaming hit nationwide, as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom quickly swam to be the 8th most-watched movie on Prime Video in the US a day after its release on the streaming service. Now, on June 1, the second Aquaman movie has fallen a couple of spots, landing at 10th, but is still holding on to the streamer’s Top 10 Movies chart in the United States.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom finds itself in great company on Prime Video’s most-watched movies list in the US. Leading that chart is a Prime Video Original movie, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, which brings back John Krasinski as the iconic action hero after the end of his 4-season series. Other notable films on the coveted chart include the animated hit Despicable Me 4, the romance novel adaptation Regretting You, Leonardo DiCaprio’s One Battle After Another, and more. Despite an abysmal 33% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, the Momoa hit boasts a solid 79% audience score, explaining its success.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom‘s streaming service comes at the perfect time for Momoa and DC. The film ended up being the final release of the old DCEU, with that shared universe ending in 2023 and James Gunn’s animated Creature Commandos series marking the start of the new DC Universe in December 2024. Now, years later, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is being watched by millions and trending on Prime Video in the United States just as Momoa is set to return to DC. The actor leaves behind Aquaman to play Lobo in Supergirl.

DC’s Supergirl movie, which stars Milly Alcock as the Girl of Steel, will debut in theaters on June 26. As such, there is less than a month to Momoa’s new chapter at DC. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom‘s new streaming success means that many viewers are being exposed to his final Aquaman appearance and being given the urge to watch more from Momoa in superhero movies, just as his new release with an exciting and violent character like Lobo is right around the corner. As such, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom helps raise excitement for Supergirl at the best time.
