John sparked a social media frenzy when he sported three different berets while attending the Cannes Film Festival. The cinema legend explained that there was an important reason for why he wore the chic headgear for his directorial debut in an interview with CNN. 'The old school directors wore berets and the glasses. And I thought, that's what I'm doing,' he told the outlet, referencing his own turn behind the camera directing Propeller One-Way Night Coach. He added that the striking look would help him remember the event in the future. 'I've been around for over 50 years doing movies, but I can't tell, when I look back, the difference between the events.'

John Travolta previously caused a social media frenzy at Cannes by wearing three different berets. The cinema legend later explained to CNN why the distinctive headwear was central to his look during the festival, where he presented his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Night Coach. ‘The old school directors wore berets and the glasses. And I thought, that’s what I’m doing,’ he said. Travolta also explained that the memorable style would help him distinguish the occasion when looking back on his career. ‘I’ve been around for over 50 years doing movies, but I can’t tell, when I look back, the difference between the events.’

'And I said, "I'm a director this time. You're an actor, play the part of a director. Look like an old school director,"' he said, adding that he 'looked up pictures' of famous filmmakers before him. 'I'm gonna do an homage to being a director,' he said of his catchy red carpet look. 'So I'm gonna play the part of being a director and then when I look back, I'll know, "Oh, that was Propeller One-Way Night Coach, that was Cannes, that was when I won the Palme d'Or." And I will have vividness of it.' While he didn't name the specific cinematic idol he took inspiration from, the actor might have been channeling The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, who is known for wearing berets.

‘And I said, “I’m a director this time. You’re an actor, play the part of a director. Look like an old school director,”’ Travolta recalled, adding that he had ‘looked up pictures’ of famous filmmakers. ‘I’m gonna do an homage to being a director,’ he said of his eye-catching red-carpet appearance. ‘So I’m gonna play the part of being a director and then when I look back, I’ll know, “Oh, that was Propeller One-Way Night Coach, that was Cannes, that was when I won the Palme d’Or.” And I will have vividness of it.’ Although he did not identify the filmmaker who inspired him, Travolta may have been paying tribute to The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, who is known for wearing berets.

Legendary Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman was also fond of the head gear. Travolta's beret streak started on his way to the event, as he rocked a navy version of the hat while piloting his own plane to Cannes with his daughter Ella Bleu. 'Big day, big night in Cannes. Stay tuned!' he captioned an Instagram video showing the journey. Later on Friday and then Saturday, the actor turned heads twice as he stepped out with new versions of the eye-catching look. Travolta was later seen weeping as he was presented with an honorary Palme d’Or ahead of the world premiere of his directorial debut

Legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman was another filmmaker known for favouring the headwear. Travolta’s beret run began on his journey to Cannes, when he wore a navy version while piloting his own plane to the festival with his daughter, Ella Bleu. ‘Big day, big night in Cannes. Stay tuned!’ he wrote alongside an Instagram video documenting the trip. Later that Friday, and again on Saturday, the actor drew attention by appearing in two more versions of the distinctive look. Travolta was subsequently seen in tears as he received an honorary Palme d’Or ahead of the world premiere of his directorial debut.
