A fatal shooting Monday night at a home in Hillsborough County is under investigation.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, around 10:30 p.m. m., shots were fired at a home located in Armature Gate Townhomes in the 13000 block of Heritage Club Drive.

Children Death

Two children with injuries, a 5-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy, were found at the scene and taken to hospital.

Sheriff Chad Chronister of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the children’s mother tucked them into bed and kissed them goodnight after they returned from dinner.

Her father, identified as Jermaine Bass, watched the children as the mother used the bathroom. She told officers that while she was in the bathroom, she heard multiple gunshots.

The woman then ran and joined a neighbor outside to get on the phone with 911.

Bass left the house pleading for help while holding her 8-year-old son, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff.

Bass told deputies that she accidentally shot her child, the sheriff said.

The 5-year-old daughter was found lying on her bed, which was covered in blood, according to deputies.

Agents say Bass claimed she was sleeping upstairs when they asked where she was.

The investigation revealed that each child had at least two or three gunshot wounds, leading detectives to believe it was not an accidental gunshot.

“You don’t accidentally shoot your kids three or four times in the head,” Chronister told a news conference.

Deputies say the 5-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. The 8-year-old boy is in critical condition.

WFLA reports that the 8-year-old boy underwent surgery Monday night at Tampa General Hospital and continues to fight for his life.

Bass was taken into custody and faces charges of first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm, aggravated child abuse and attempted first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

“This is a case and an experience that no parent should have to live through, and no law enforcement officer or first responder should have to witness. We, as a sheriff’s office, are fighting back today. Our detectives and officers who were on scene are going to need help, and we’re bringing in some counselors to try to help them get through this awful scene that they had to witness and detectives have to work through as they continue to put the pieces of the puzzle together here.” Chronister said at a news conference.

The investigation is ongoing.
