Who is Jordan McSweeney?

This is the first photo of the 29-year-old ‘stranger’ accused of beating aspiring barrister Zara Aleena to death as she walked home from a night out with friends in east London.

Jordan McSweeney appeared before Thames Magistrates Court today, charged with murder, robbery and attempted rape following the brutal murder of the 35-year-old man in Ilford in the early hours of Sunday morning. The defendant only spoke once to confirm his name and looked down as charges were read this afternoon.

The court heard how Zara suffered traumatic head injuries after being punched in the back of the head shortly after 2 a.m. her as she walked down Cranbrook Road.

Prosecutor Varinder Hayre said McSweeney had also attempted to carry out a sexual assault on Zara, after she was beaten, and had stolen her mobile phone, her house keys and her handbag.

McSweeney turned up at Bow Pier at lunchtime. She wore a gray tracksuit for the brief five-minute hearing, in which no reason was given. She was denied bail and remanded into custody to attend the Old Bailey on July 27. Some of Ms. Aleena’s family and friends were present in court, and some of them wept upon hearing the details of the case.

Judge Shanta Deonarine told McSweeney: ‘On June 26 at Cranbrook Road [Ilford] you murdered Zara Aleena. The same day in the same place you stole from Zara Aleena her keys, her phone and her bag.

The judge told the murder suspect: ‘These are all indictable offences, so I will send you to the [Old Bailey] Central Criminal Court. You are in pretrial detention until a bond hearing.’

The Metropolitan Police said Ms Aleena died of serious head injuries after she was attacked on busy Cranbrook Road, her screams waking up nearby residents who frantically called 999. Paramedics rushed to the scene where they performed CPR for two hours before taking Ms. Aleena to the hospital around 4:30 am. She was pronounced dead shortly after.

statement

In a statement today, her bereaved family said the last few days had been “shocking and unimaginable”, describing Zara as “everyone’s friend” and “pure of heart”. They added that she wanted to be a lawyer since she was five years old and that she “put her party shoes in her bag” and “walked everywhere” because she “believed that a woman should be able to walk to her house.”

Miss Aleena is the 16th woman in London and the 52nd woman in the UK to be killed by a man in 2022, and her case bears a chilling similarity to those of Sabina Nessa and Sarah Everard, who were killed while walking home. in the capital. last year.

In a statement they said: ‘She was a joy to all of us, her sparkling eyes and jet-black curly hair. Her glorious laugh and her sweet, smiling voice. Her tiny body embodied a passionate spirit and indomitable energy…

“She was authentic and she refused to try to impress anyone, but she impressed us. She was the rock of our family. Zara was stoic and kept it all together and she never complained. She brought our community together.

‘No one worked harder than Zara’ is what we heard from everyone who knew her. Zara was happy and at a time in her life when her joy radiated and flourished.’

They added: ‘She walked everywhere. She put her party shoes in a bag and put on her sneakers. She walked.

‘Zara believed that a woman should be able to walk home. Now, her dreams of a family are shattered, her future brutally snatched away.

The family said the last few days have been ‘shocking’ and ‘unimaginable’ and stated: ‘We must stop and prevent violence against women and girls.’

CCTV Footage

One trader, who asked not to be identified, said police had collected footage from his CCTV camera for investigation.

He said: ‘It’s terrible what happened to that young lady.

“I gave the police the footage because I want to do everything I can to help solve this horrible murder.”

People living along the street say they recorded footage from 2:13 a.m. that they gave to police.

A man living on Cranbrook Road who captured the separate footage told MailOnline: “In the footage you can see a woman walking down the street and then a man following her about 10 feet away.”

She speeds up and he does the same and they both head towards Gants Hill. They had been walking from Ilford to Cranbrook Road.

The police have seen the images and taken them away. My daughter said that she heard a woman scream around 2 am. There were a couple of screams, but that was it.

“We live on a fairly busy street and there are often people yelling at all hours of the day.

“Police who came to collect the footage told us that the man had started following the woman through the entrance to Valentines Park.”
