Marcos Javier Acuña is an Argentine professional football player. He currently plays for the Spanish club Sevilla and the Argentina national team. His playing position is a left-back

Acuña has previously played for Ferro Carril Oeste, Racing Club, and Sporting CP. On 14 September 2020, he joined Spanish club Sevilla on a four-year deal for a transfer fee of €11 million. 

On the international level, Acuña has represented Argentina at various age levels. He has represented Argentina at the senior level. He made his senior international team debut for Argentina on 16 November 2016 in a World Cup Qualifier 2018. He represented Argentina at the 2018 FIFA World Cup as well as at the 2019 and 2021 Copa America. In November 2022, he was named to Argentina’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Since his debut, he has obtained over 45 caps for Argentina.

Ferro Carril Oeste

  • In 2008, Acuña joined the youth team of Ferro Carril Oeste and began his career at the club.

  • During the 2014-15 season, Acuña was part of Racing’s championship team that won the 2014 Argentine Primera Division, cutting a streak of 13 years without titles for the Avellaneda side, in which he played 15 games and scored two goals.
  • From 2014 to 2017, Acuña made 107 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals and providing 26 assists in all the competitions.

Sporting CP

  • On 12 June 2017, Acuña signed for Portuguese club Sporting CP for a transfer fee of €9 million. He made his debut for the club on 6 August 2017 in a 2-0 away victory over Desportivo Aves. On 22 October 2017, he scored his first goal for the club, scoring twice in a 5-1 win against Chaves. 
  • At Sporting CP, Acuña went on to play three seasons for the club where he made 135 appearances for the club, scoring 9 goals and providing 25 assists in all the competitions.
  • With Sporting CP, Acuña won two Taca da Liga (in 2017-18, 2018-19) and one Taca de Portugal (in 2018-19). 

Sevilla

  • On 14 September 2020, Acuña joined Spanish club Sevilla on a four-year deal for a transfer fee of €11 million. He made his debut for the club on 27 September 2020 in a 3-1 win against Cádiz CF. On 4 April 2021, he scored his first goal for the club in a 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid. In his first season, he made 37 appearances for the club, scoring once and providing 4 assists in all the competitions.
  • On 13 February 2021, Acuña extended his contract with Sevilla until 2025. During his 2021-22 season, he made 41 appearances for the club, scoring once and providing 4 assists in all the competitions.
