Thiam was approached at the event by dancer Katherine Dunham, who requested that he accompany her in the United States to spread African culture among African-Americans during the civil rights struggle.

Thiam came to the United States in 1968 and settled in East St. Louis, where he taught African Cultural Studies at Southern Illinois University. Martin Luther King Jr., Jesse Jackson, Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad, the Black Panthers, and the Black Liberation Front were among the figures of the civil rights he spoke with.

Before their gatherings, Thiam played the djembe drum to unite African Americans with their spiritual forebears in Africa. His collaborators were Lester Bowie, Freddie Hubbard, B.B. King, Don Pullen, Nancy Wilson, and the World Saxophone Quartet.

Thiam’s debut album, Ndende Safarra, was recorded in 1974 with B.B. King and Nancy Wilson to raise money for African drought victims. President Nixon asked the ensemble to play in the White House in Washington, D.C. Back to Africa, Thiam’s second album was released in 1999. Thiam was instrumental in promoting African artists like Youssou Ndour, Salif Keita, and Baaba Maal.

Sone, Thiam’s band, was chosen to play for the inauguration of Walt Disney’s EPCOT Center in 1982. Thiam went on to work as a consultant for Walt Disney Entertainment Operations, traveling with executives to discover a talent for EPCOT’s World Showcases and the 1997 Broadway production of The Lion King.

Thiam has taught in Europe, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Caribbean and at UCLA, Southern Illinois University, and Morris Brown College. In 2005, he founded Darou Khafour, a non-profit organization committed to working with imams, village leaders, and authorities to improve the quality of life in Lac Rose, Bambilor, and nearby communities in Senegal.
