Who is Darko Desic?

Darko Desic, 64, escaped from Grafton jail in 1992 and fled to Avalon on the city’s wealthy north beaches, where he managed to escape detection for decades.

But his cash-based work as a casual laborer for local wealthy families petered out when Sydney was put under lock and key to combat a Covid outbreak.

After losing his home and being forced to sleep on the beach, he decided he would be better off in prison, so he ended his three decades on the run and turned himself in, the Daily Telegraph reported.

He was sleeping on the beach on Saturday night and he said, ‘Fill it up, I’ll go back to jail where there is a roof over my head,’ ‘a police source revealed.

Born in the former Yugoslavia, Desic was imprisoned for three years and eight months in 1991 after he was caught growing cannabis, but he literally got out of jail after just 13 months.

In the middle of the night on August 1, 1992, he used a metal saw to cut the bars of the windows of his cell and went out into the prison yard.

He then he broke into a workshop and grabbed a pair of bolt cutters to smash through the prison fence to freedom.

But he also faces an additional maximum of seven years in jail for escaping from prison in the first place after police charged him with escaping legal custody.

“He said that he has been living in Avalon, just doing odd jobs and jobs for cash for almost three decades,” the law enforcement source said.

“ He has been completely respectful of the law, he has never been the object of attention, he has never been spoken to. He told us that he never caused any problems for anyone, so no one looked at him twice.

“But since Covid stopped all cash work, he has been homeless for the past two weeks.”

Desic appeared via video link in Central Local Court on Tuesday and will be back in court on September 28.

As expected, he did not request bail.
