Leigha West Biography
Who is Leigha West ?
A woman who strangled her partner after threatening to kill her was saved from jail.
Leigha West, 27, from Hull, threw her partner onto the sofa at their Hessle Road estate before strangling her until she passed out, having previously replied “yes, she’s gone too far now” when asked by the couple if West I was going to kill her. .
West pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm for the July 7 incident and a judge sentenced her to a 20-month suspended prison sentence at Hull Crown Court.
He will serve 25 days in rehab, work 115 hours unpaid, and received a five-year restraining order that prevents him from contacting his victim.
Prosecutor Stephen Welch told the court that West and his partner went out for drinks. There they got into an argument since the defendant had been paying with a bank card that she found.
Welch added that when they returned to the victim’s home, the argument restarted, and after a while, West stormed out and the complainant slammed the door.
At 1:20 a.m. m., West returned to his house and began banging on the door to be let in.
The court heard that the victim refused and West broke the bathroom window to get in.
He then chased the victim, when he caught up with her, he strangled her, punched her and threw her to the ground.
The victim pleaded with West to leave her or to let her go. She was so terrified that she was hyperventilating and thought about jumping out of her kitchen window to escape her, the court heard.
But West grabbed her and threw her to the ground. He then threw her onto the couch again and strangled her until she passed out, Welch said. The victim asked if he would kill her and West responded, “Yes I will, she’s already gone too far.”
West then fled. At first, the victim was too scared to move, but then she ran to a neighbor’s house and banged on the door to call the police. Her house was covered in the blood of both women.
Police arrested West at Hull Royal Infirmary the following day, where he was receiving treatment for cuts to his forearm. The victim was also taken to the hospital to be treated for bruises. She was kept in care longer as she had lost consciousness of herself during the assault.
In a victim’s personal statement read in court, the victim said that this incident was one of the worst moments of her life. She didn’t think that she would face abuse in a relationship where someone was meant to take care of her.
She added that this has caused her severe mental trauma as she struggles to allow her family members to get close to her and finds it difficult to form new relationships. She still suffers from panic attacks as a result of this incident.
Cathy Kioko-Gilligan, in mitigation, told the court that West pleaded guilty the first chance she got. She added: ‘This was a troubled relationship that came to a sad end. The defendant attended the victim twice the night of the incident to check if she was okay.
‘There was remorse then, and there is remorse now. This is out of character for this defendant. He has the support of his family so he also accepts that he needs professional help.’
Recorder Anthony Kelbrick told West: “This is a very serious offense of assault causing actual bodily harm. This was done in the context of a personal relationship, it is domestic violence. While the physical injuries were not serious, the mental impact was enormous and left an extremely long-lasting effect on the victim.
