Who is Paul Allard Hodgkins ?
A Florida man who violated the Senate chamber on January 6 was sentenced to 8 months behind bars Monday, in the first punishment meted out to a Capitol rioter for a felony.
Paul Allard Hodgkins, 38, apologized to the court, saying that he was ashamed of his actions and that he had been caught the moment he joined the mob in the Capitol building.
“If I had any idea that the protest … would escalate (as) it did … I would never have ventured beyond the Pennsylvania Avenue sidewalk,” Hodgkins told the judge, adding: “This was a foolish decision. from my part. ”
Prosecutors had asked him to serve 18 months, arguing in a recent filing that Hodgkins “like all troublemakers, contributed to the collective threat to democracy” by forcing lawmakers to temporarily halt his certification of President Biden’s election victory.wikipedia

Hodgkins was seen in videos and photos of the siege holding a “Trump 2020” flag over his shoulder on the Senate floor. He also wore a “Trump 2020” t-shirt and goggles around his neck as he took selfies with other rioters on the stand behind him.
The Tampa man pleaded guilty last month to one count of obstruction of official proceeding, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, after prosecutors agreed to drop all four misdemeanor charges against him.
His attorney has asked US District Judge Randolph Moss not to send Hodgkins to prison, saying the shame attributed to him for participating in the siege should be punishment enough.
“Any punishment this court can provide will pale in comparison to the scarlet letter that Mr. Hodgkins will wear for the rest of his life,” wrote Patrick N. Leduc in a recent presentation, referencing Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel “The Letter scarlet”.
The judge noted that reaching a sentence was complicated because there was no benchmark that the court could apply.

“The court here had to consider both what I believe to be the extremely damaging events that occurred that day, as well as who Mr. Hodgkins is as an individual,” Moss said. “And as I think is reflected in the sentence I imposed, I tried to strike that balance.”
Hodgkins will be turned over to the Bureau of Prisons at a later date.
His sentencing could set the bar for the punishments of hundreds of other defendants, should they opt for a plea deal or go to trial. Unlike Hodgkins, some of the others have been indicted for their role in larger conspiracies linked to the insurrection.
