Who is Shawn Laval Smith?

Shawn Laval Smith, 31, was identified by LAPD Tuesday night as the suspect captured on video in chilling footage as he calmly purchased a vaporizer at a 7-Eleven just 30 minutes after the cold-blooded murder.

He should be considered armed and dangerous. If you are seen, stay away, call 911,’ police said in a statement.

Los Angles County Sheriff’s Department records list Smith as currently free on $1,000 bond from a misdemeanor arrest in October 2020.

The nature of the charge was not immediately clear, and it was not clear why the case has not yet been resolved.

Smith has recently been seen in Pasadena, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Covina, San Diego and San Francisco, police said.

The alleged killer has a long rap sheet, with dozens of prior charges in North Carolina and South Carolina, public records show.

Smith’s previous East Coast charges include assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, assault on a police officer, breaking and entering, possession of a stolen vehicle, and misdemeanor theft and possession of stolen property. The results of those cases were not immediately clear.

He is also currently free on $50,000 bail in Charleston, South Carolina, in connection with a November 2019 arrest on suspicion of firing a gun at an occupied vehicle, court records show. An indictment in that case was entered on March 16, 2020, just before COVID-19 paralyzed the courts, and the record shows no further action in the case.

Earlier, at a news conference Tuesday, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. John Radke revealed that minutes before she was killed, Brianna had texted a friend to tell her that someone at the store was “giving him a bad vibe.

Shocking Attack

The shocking attack appears to be random, with no known connection between the victim and her killer, and no clear motive.

Despite his neat and well-groomed appearance, cops say they strongly suspect the suspect is homeless, based on his journey on foot and information they refused to release.

Police say the wanted man was seen walking throughout the area and entering various stores, speculating that he chose to attack Brianna after finding her working alone.

Brianna, 24, was working alone at the upscale Croft House furniture store in the upscale Fairfax neighborhood of Los Angeles on Thursday when the killer walked in around 1:50 p.m. m. and he stabbed her to death before escaping from her through the back door.

Twenty minutes later, another customer entered the store and found her in a pool of blood. When the police arrived, she was dead.

On Tuesday, authorities also announced a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the murder suspect, $200,000 from community donations and the remainder from city funds.

“We will find this vicious criminal, have him arrested and prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law,” said Councilman Paul Koretz in announcing the reward.

LAPD Chief Michel Moore described the male suspect as African American, 6 feet to 6 feet 5 inches tall, with a slim build and short dreadlocks.

Los Angeles police arrested 14 people last November in connection with 11 recent store robberies, where nearly $340,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.

A Los Angeles Nordstrom, a Lululemon in Studio City, a Fairfax District store and a CVS Pharmacy in South Los Angeles are among the affected stores.

However, due to the county’s zero bail policies, all suspects were released within hours of being handcuffed.

Gascon said of rising crime rates: “The reality is that we go through these cycles, and we go through cycles for a variety of reasons… In many ways, we can’t judge our way out of social inequalities, inequalities of income, the homeless, the desperation that we have.

He was last seen wearing a dark hoodie, dark pants, black sneakers and mirrored sunglasses, and carrying a black backpack.

He’ he Walked for miles, north, south, east and west, throughout this neighborhood. Anyone out there knows this man. Someone out there knows what he did, and boy is there a lot of money on the table,” Lt. Radke said.

Chief Moore confirmed that investigators believe the suspect is homeless, based on his journey on foot with a backpack, as well as other information that he was unable to release to the public.

Police say the suspected killer was seen walking throughout the area and entering various stores, speculating that he chose to attack Brianna after finding her working alone in the store.

“He visited businesses up and down La Brea, and also along the Beverly corridor, businesses large and small,” before and after the killing, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said.

The killer spent about four minutes in the Croft House furniture store, during which time he stabbed Brianna with a knife, before calmly walking out the back door of the store.

Brianna, an architectural design student from Pacific Palisades, was discovered lying in a pool of blood 20 minutes after the attack by a horrified customer, who she was heard screaming, “Oh my God!”

Kupfer died at the scene before he could get help.

“She was a kind soul and she was always trying to improve herself and everything around her,” Kupfer said, fighting back tears. She cared about people.

The killing comes amid a huge increase in crime in Los Angeles, with a 52% increase in homicides in Los Angeles last year from 2019, and a 59% increase in shooting incidents, according to data from LAPD.

Kupfer says that she thinks politicians are ignoring this rise in violent crime.

“We need to stand up for [my daughter] as a beacon of what’s wrong and make sure people recognize it, because her children could be her next, and it’s an impossible price to pay,” she said.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is under fire for failing to crack down on the recent uptick in violence.

He won over voters last year with promises of sweeping criminal justice reforms that critics say put the interests of criminals before community safety, Fox News reported.

The city has also suffered a shocking wave of home burglaries and organized attacks on retailers.

Jacqueline Avant, the 81-year-old wife of music producer Clarence Avant, became the highest-profile robbery victim when she was shot to death at her $2.7 million Beverly Hills mansion in December.

On January 3, in nearby San Jose, nine thugs armed with hammers broke into a San Jose mall and smashed three store windows before fleeing with $110,000 in jewelry.
