Who was Carl Madsen ?
Carl Madsen, who served as an NFL field umpire and later as a replay official, died Sunday. He was 71 years old.

Madsen, 71, was driving to his home in Weldon Spring, Missouri, when he had an apparent medical problem. Police were called for the first time at 4:46 p.m. CT about a pickup truck that stopped in a lane of Interstate 65 North with the driver unconscious.
Death
Metropolitan Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron said Monday that officers opened a window, pulled Madsen out of the vehicle and performed chest compressions until the fire department arrived. Madsen was taken to St. Thomas Midtown Hospital, where he died.
Madsen joined the NFL refereeing staff as a referee in 1997 and worked the field during the 2008 season. He has worked on repeat since 2009.
He also served in the United States Air Force from 1973 to 1976.
“Carl Madsen was an NFL official for more than two decades, first as a highly
respected field official before moving into a repeat role beginning in 2009,” said Walt Anderson, the league’s vice president of refereeing. “A terrific friend and colleague, Carl’s love of soccer and dedication to umpiring was always present as he generously shared his time mentoring young officials in clinics across the country. An Air Force Veteran, Carl had a tremendous spirit and we will miss him very much. ”
Scott Green, executive director of the NFL Umpires Association, added:
“Those who worked with him on the field and on replay will miss Carl. He had a nickname among his fellow ‘Big Country’ officials, which was not only related to his size but also to his great personality as a warm and generous man. “
