Early Life

Anna Sui was born on August 4, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan. She is a second-generation Chinese-American. Anna’s parents, Grace Sui Fang and Paul Sui, met in Paris while studying at the Sorbonne; Grace was studying painting, and Paul was studying engineering. Sui’s maternal grandfather, Fang Chih, was a Chinese diplomat. On her mother’s side, Anna is a descendant of the Fang clan from Tongcheng, Anhui. She is also an 18th-generation descendant of Chinese poet Fang Bao, who co-founded the Tongcheng School during the Qing dynasty. She is the aunt of actress Chase Sui Wonders, who has appeared in films such as “Bodies Bodies Bodies” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and plays Quinn Hackett on the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series “The Studio.” By the age of four, Anna knew she wanted to grow up to be a fashion designer. She often accompanied her mother to shop for fabrics, and after watching Grace sew, young Anna collected the fabric scraps and used them to make clothing for her Barbies. Sui soon started putting her own outfits together, and she later moved to New York to study at the Parsons School of Design.

Career

After completing her sophomore year at Parsons, the juniors fashion label Charlie’s Girls hired Sui in 1975. There, she designed clothing for sportswear labels and did styling for photo shoots by her friend Steven Meisel. After Charlie’s Girls closed, Anna worked for sportswear designers such as Simultanee and Bobbie Brooks. She also started designing and making clothes on her own out of her apartment. She has said that she was inspired to dress rock stars and their fans, and she targeted her sales to music stores. In August 1979, some of Sui’s designs were featured in a Macy’s ad in The New York Times’ Sunday Edition. Anna was working at Glenora at the time, and her manager fired her after seeing the ad. Sui subsequently started a business from her apartment with the $300 she had in savings. Around 1987, Annette Breindel invited Anna to move her fashion line into her showroom, Annette B. Breindel was known for nurturing young fashion designers, and she was a huge influence on Sui. Anna moved her business into the garment district during this period, and by the end of the decade, she had a global following. In 1991, she had a major breakthrough when superstar Madonna, a friend of Steven Meisel, wore one of Sui’s designs to  Paris Fashion Week. Madonna wore the outfit again for a photoshoot she and Meisel did for Vogue. Anna’s first runway show occurred later that year in New York City.

In 1992, Sui opened her first retail location in New York City, and the following year, she opened a Hollywood location. That year she added menswear to her runway collections, and Mick Jagger wore one of her suits on “Saturday Night Live.” In 1997, Anna opened boutiques in Osaka and Tokyo, and she designed a shoe line with Italian shoemaker Ballin. In 1999, she launched the fragrance Anna Sui Classic, and in 2000, she released a skincare line. In 2003, Sui released another fragrance, Dolly Girl. In 2009, she was honored with the CFDA Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2017, “The World of Anna Sui” exhibition opened at London’s Fashion and Textile Museum.

After the 2008 Mumbai attacks, she auctioned off several of her designs on eBay and donated the proceeds to Citizens for Justice and Peace. In 2010, Sui took part in a charity event for the World Wildlife Foundation-Malaysia’s Forest Restoration and Orang-Utan Monitoring Project. After the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Anna designed shirts with the phrase “Japan, We’re All in This Together” on them and donated the proceeds to the Japan Disaster Relief Fund.
