Anti-Trump Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger said his party is

Retiring Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois suggested Sunday that his party is facing an uphill battle to win control of Congress in November – despite months of a projected ‘red wave’ in the 2022 midterm cycle.

The military veteran and lawmaker told NBC News’ Meet The Press that it would be a combination of ‘cruel’ anti-abortion stances along with the fringe appeal of candidates endorsed by Donald Trump that could spell the GOP‘s downfall.

He himself did not rule out supporting a Democratic candidate in future elections – if their GOP opponent promoted false 2020 election fraud theories.

Backlash over the Supreme Court‘s overturning of Roe v. Wade – and GOP-led states’ subsequent abortion bans – has given Democrats unprecedented new energy going into the fall races.

On the left and among Independents, the fight over pro-choice rights is shattering primary election turnout records and turning red-leaning districts into toss-ups.

‘I think it’s definitely changed the complexion of the midterms some,’ Kinzinger said on Sunday.

‘Even Donald Trump said, “Rape, incest, life of the mother exception.” And now you’ve been seeing these Republicans go, “There is absolutely no exception,” because somehow in the Republican Party the crueler you are the more likely you are to win a primary.’

He went on to warn that ‘Republicans are in real trouble because we have no leadership’ and suggested that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell were more or less ineffective.

‘So Kevin McCarthy isn’t leading. He’s asking, “What does Marjorie Taylor Greene want me to do?”‘ Kinzinger said, referring to the firebrand Georgia Trump ally who Congressional Democrats pulled off of all committees for her violent and bizarre online rhetoric before getting elected.

Kinzinger continued, ‘Mitch McConnell’s just trying to save the Senate. He’s probably not going to do that.’

‘We have no leaders- and no wonder our base basically believes everything Donald Trump says,’ he said.

The Illinois Republican announced last year that he would not be seeking re-election, after facing a barrage of attacks from Trump for voting to impeach him over the US Capitol riot.

He’s since dedicated his remaining time in Congress to investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election through his work on the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack.

He accused House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy of being influenced by the fringe right wing of the Republican Party, telling Meet The Press that 'Kevin McCarthy isn't leading. He's asking, "What does Marjorie Taylor Greene want me to do?"'

And Kinzinger signaled that his work will continue after leaving office – when asked about supporting Democratic candidates in the future, he pledged to back anyone challenging fellow Republicans who parrot Trump’s lies.

‘Yeah, I’m a conservative. But the bottom line is: The biggest threat right now to our country is democracy,’ Kinzinger said.

‘And if you have Republicans that are running against even left-wing Democrats that believe in democracy and believe in voting, that person should be elected over somebody who basically would overthrow the will of the people and ultimately destroy this country.’

Without America’s democratic institutions in tact, Kinzinger warned the country would devolve ‘into a power struggle between groups of different races, of different ethnicities, of different religions.’

‘The thing that holds us together is this belief that we can self-govern. Take that away, this country’s a mess,’ he said.

‘Republicans that are for that have no place in office. I don’t care what their policy position on taxes are.’
