Vancouver father Paul Stanley Schmidt was tragically killed on Sunday, stabbed by an attacker he had allegedly asked not to smoke in front of his daughter.
At around 5:30pm on 26 March, Paul was stabbed to death outside the Starbucks on Pender/Granville.
The father died from his injuries and is survived by his fiancée, Ashley Umali, and his three-year-old daughter, Erica.
The family, who were inside ordering drinks, told the Vancouver Sun that Paul had asked Inderdeep Singh Gosa, 32, not to vape near his young daughter, when he was attacked.
‘Paul lived for his wife and daughter… that was his whole life,’ his mother, Kathy, told Global News.

Since the attack, a man has been charged with second-degree murder in the killing.
Paul’s mother, Kathy Schmidt, said she would like to see the charge revised as first-degree murder.
First-degree murder requires proof of intent and deliberation.
She told the Vancouver Sun: ‘This is so horribly wrong what happened… It all started because he was vaping next to the baby. Ashley is in shock: she saw it all. She is so devastated.’
She also said she was ‘incredibly suprised’ nobody rushed to help her dying son.
‘It wasn’t until basically he was in dire straits that somebody flagged down an officer on the sidewalk,’ she told CityNews.
Police said an officer was flagged down around 5:40pm, ten minutes after the attack.
The family are also asking people not to share a video of the attack and have requested it be taken down.
Paul’s step-sister Jessica wrote on Facebook: ‘You have likely already seen this on the news or anywhere on social media… about the Vancouver Stabbing near Starbucks.
‘The victim was my brother. Someone took my brother’s life yesterday and another person filmed it (do NOT watch) instead of calling the police and worse off posted it on social media very clearly for views.’
Investigators do not believe the victim and suspect knew each other.
