Donald Glover will star as a little-known Spider-Man supervillain in an upcoming film from Sony Pictures.
The 39-year-old actor and rapper signed on to play Hypno-Hustler, a criminal who first appeared in 1978, in the as-yet-untitled movie.
Eddie Murphy’s son Myles will write the film and Glover will also produce the upcoming feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hypno-Hustler’s real name in the comics is Antoine Delsoin.
He’s the lead singer of a band called The Mercy Killers, and he uses hypnosis technology to subdue and rob his audiences.
While not a top adversary for the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, sources reportedly told THR that Glover was drawn to the musical aspect of the character.
The Community star has appeared as several characters in the larger Spider-Man universe over the years.

In the 2017 movie Spider-Man: Homecoming, Glover appeared as low-level criminal Aaron Davis who was revealed to be Miles Morales’ uncle in a deleted scene.
The Atlanta actor voiced Spider-Man back in 2015 in the animated series Ultimate Spider-Man on Disney XD.
Glover was also in the running to play the character in The Amazing Spider-Man back in 2012 though the role ultimately went to Andrew Garfield.

He put up a post about potentially playing the character, and he explained that’s ‘when the world went crazy.’
‘Half the world was like “Donald for Spider-Man we’re only gonna watch the next Spider-Man if Donald Glover’s playing Peter Parker,”‘ he joked. ‘And the other half was like “He’s Black, kill him!”‘
Sony has several more Spider-Man films coming soon including Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web and Spider-Woman.
